How can I go about becoming a furry?

From someone who's been dancing on the edge of the volcano for years (just look at my username and avatar for pete's sake), like everybody else said, you are if you want to be, aren't if you don't. It's quite the spectrum too, so don't feel like you have to kitchen sink a particular identity. I hope you have fun figuring out whether it's a community you want to belong to.

(PS - Even as someone that doesn't really identify as a furry, but shares a lot in common, Stardew Valley IS WAY BETTER when using the furry mods to make everyone cute/rad animal people. Trust me.)

If you are an artist though, particularly if you are willing to 'get your hands dirty' so to speak... You can make serious money in the fandom.But I don't think explaining more than that is appropriate for tapas xD

Yeah it's true. The NSFW artists make bank on commissions, at least until you consider that it is a full-time job for many of them and they have to pay for things like insurance out of pocket. I theorize it's because the fandom is so sex-positive but also primarily composed of adults who actually have jobs and can afford spending money on commissions. It is the same principle with fursuit makers. Many furries will pay upwards of $4,000 USD to have a costume made of their characters.

Dang, $4,000 USD is enough to buy a brand new car in my country, my local currency is extremely devalued right now, I guess I'll give it a try then, I'd make minimum wage with only $200, american minimun wage would make me rich lol xD

I have a tendency to use characters from things I've made as usernames/avatars - my favorite villain from a years long roleplaying campaign I ran was a nasty, egotistical fae named Ewindale Moss. His name isn't nearly as catchy as Mr. Wulf, and since that could refer to either Mr. Jonathan or Trevor from my Chrysalis Falls stories, I decided to run with that for my web name these days. Again, I'm terrible about dancing around the edge of things.

Yeah, you have to watch for Nazi "whatevers" in any genre. The Nazi apologists at anime cons are definitely something else too. Hetalia brought a lot of them out.

I feel like furries were just kicked so hard for so long by the rest of the internet that the whatever restraint the fandom had as a baseline has been atrophying. Like, if you're going to hate me anyway, I might as be right out in the open about my list of weird kinks - which, hey kinkshaming isn't cool, but there's a bunch of vile shit at the edges people try to sneak in assuming "everything" goes.

But for whatever reason, certain members of the furry fandom are much louder and more offensive than like-minded people from other fandoms.

Weird, yesterday I read an article during my research about the fandom that there's a higher percentage of autistic people in the fandom in comparison to the percentage in the general populace, maybe that's why? which would also explain why @indagold said they're hyperactive, and have a attention deficit, both signals of autism... dunno, thanks for the help @Kiweevil I really appreciate.

Yeah it sucks. Sometimes random things trigger it. I once posted big chungus and some fat rabbit memes so someone took that as an excuse to post fat furry shit in my dms. I literally stopped posting rabbit pics and changed my avatar cause I was so grossed out. I'm just letting you know this will happen and you will not be prepared for it.

They actively chase people off social media who do something they don't approve of but actual creeps in their community they just kinda ignore if they got good art.
