How did you make your own website?

I've always loved comic websites (the classic one page layout with the before/next buttons below every page) and wondered who makes them? I tried fiddling with wordpress (after spending too much money on some upgrades >_< ) and got completely overwhelmed by the simple concept.
If you know anyone who knows how to do this or have done so yourself could you offer some tips?

Comicfury is a webcomic hosting site which will give you your own home page set up that way. You can then edit it with CSS to your heart's content! It also has pages for character bios and such.

There are Tumblr themes you can use which are set up in a similar way.

Beyond that, if you wanted a platform-independent site, hosting services like WIX and Wordpress may have premade webcomic layout options. WIX allows you to drag-and-drop elements without needing to know any code, which is ideal for me since the days where I had time to spend hours fiddling around with code guts I scarcely understood are long behind me.

yes its quite nerve wrecking. been working with WP for 8 years now and i learn every year LOL. just like you i was desperate and that desperation drove me to learn how to build websites.

I studied and watched videos online. learned how websites worked and how to achieve them. learned about hosting servers, domain names , FTP and PHP. Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS.

you really have to educate yourself if you want to do it . however you can hire someone but usually its a bit pricy depending on who you get.

I myself build websites professionally and i am for hire if you are interested. but then again, i can also give you pointers as well.

My main website is on ComicFury. I just used one of the default layouts from there and tweaked it to my own liking. I have a little bit of experience with HTML thanks to websites such as Splinder (RIP), Myspace (also RIP) and Tumblr + some web design classes I took when I was in Uni (though most of my knowledge comes from doing stuff on blogs, really). The ComicFury forums have a section that it's dedicated to customizing your layout where you can ask questions and also some pretty extensive documentation on how to edit stuff.

I also have a "Wordpress" site, though that's technically a Wordpress.com blog and not an actual site. Again, I just used one of the default layouts and tweaked it to my own liking, within the limits allowed to free accounts. There is a "button" function that you can add to your articles, which can be used to create "First", "Previous" and "Next" button and should work with any layout, so if you want you could easily use it to link from one page to the other! ...The only problem is that you'll have to do it manually for each and every page you post, which is why I eventually decided to scrap the "one page per update" model and went for "one chapter per update"... linking manually to every single page was going to be hell otherwise XD

I hand-coded my website https://orang.esoda.ga/, but I would not recommend going that route as 1) it's countless hours wasted figuring out CSS and debugging, 2) using a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) service like webflow offers better responsiveness and an actual system to manage content.

But... If you want to learn how to make your own website, khan academy has a great beginner's course for learning basic HTML/CSS.

I used Wix, which is great! It's super easy to use, very versatile, and free if you don't mind the little banner. You can do a lot of really cool and unique things with clever application of website elements and apps, or you can go off one of their standard templates and customize it to suit your content.

I initially learned how to build websites from scratch with HTML when I was in high school, and I got pretty good at it, but... Like... Screw that. It's so much faster and easier to use a site like Wix.

Here's my comic/art tips site. I use Wordpress and the theme "webcomic."

I know a little CSS and HTML, so I was able to customize it. But, if you're unfamiliar with those, just search for a free comic theme you like, and you'll have a decent website. You shouldn't need to pay for any upgrades. But if you're really struggling, you can always save up and hire someone to get a site started for you.

If you're doing a scrolling/vertical comic, make sure you get a theme that works well for that. For example, here's a YouTube tutorial for how to make a scrolling webcomic website.

Those classic comic site layouts are great for storytelling! If WordPress felt overwhelming, you might want to try simpler site builders or hire a web designer familiar with comic or webtoon layouts. Some services specialize in custom comic websites with next/previous navigation built in.
