Well I have a theme to my front covers. Each one is modelled off of some kind of visuals by the band Franz Ferdinand.
I've named the chapters after their songs as well so it works surprisingly well.
Similarly to my pages, backgrounds are often minimal or abstract. This is because the comic has a deeply 1980s feel and I wanted to emulate the style in the art and colours. Comics from the 80s tend to experiment in this way with backgrounds. (at least from my experience of reading them)
My first cover is based off of the album cover for "Tonight: Franz Ferdinand" but I will also be using photoshoot material and music videos. For example, the chapter "Johnny Delusional" will feature the story's villain dressed in the uniform seen in the Johnny Delusional music video.
As for the composition it's simple - the main character is focal and in the front, and this chapter explores him as a person. I wanted to paint him as an unpredictable and mysterious character so using the album cover pose did this nicely.
As for how I made it step by step, I did the whole thing digitally.
I sketched it out, cleaned up my sketch and then painted it. I used an oil painting brush.
I created gradients and some other assets and just kind of messed with them until I got a appealing background.
