How do you do motion lines and blurs?

I notice everyone does theirs a little different.

Sometimes it's a few lines, sometimes it's all lines.
Sometimes it's drawn into the art, sometimes it's added last.

So how do you do them?
I personally add after with a few lines because I'm not used to drawing them.
Someday I want to redo them because mine don't look fast enough.

Not sure if I have any specific guidelines I use, though I do feel the ones at the very edge left and right don't belong there. I think it also could use more. It's more of a trial and error thing.

I like to 'replace' the lineart with motion lines in the direction the object is travelling in. The logic is that lineart denotes seeing something really clearly, and when something's moving really fast, you're not going to see it very clearly (Though I guess this picture isn't the best example of what I'm talking about; I like the motion lines at the bottom of his hand and the power plug more than the ones at the top and left of his hand, is what I'm saying :P)

So I've been experimenting with white and black motion lines like I've seen in some old school anime.
I think it looks better?
I think I should work on incorporating the speed into the art tho

I'm trying to do this more, (and get better at it) as I tend to prefer just clear poses and action instead of heavy smears.
Some korean comics I've read have amazing action, but its so dowsed in fx and blurs its hard to tell whats going on.
multiples with smear lines.

Duplicated the entire layer, flattening it, adding a directional blur to it, then erasing out the parts I don't want blured. Might be cheap, but its very fast and easy.

I know its obnoxious to draw over others art, so dont take this the wrong way, I think this panel looks awesome, I really like your art style! The bottom part where she is anticipating the launch is just great!
But I agree it just was laking oomph. I i just wanted to poke at it for my own curiosity.

I think the bottom part of the panel being blured is adding confusion to the action. the part immediately around her is awesome, cause its showing the wing motion, but maybe it goes too far?
The BG is very crisp in the actual action portion, so I tried adding motion blur, and I think it helps, then just pushed the smear more. using the brush and finger tip smear tool
I dunno. I hope this comes across as a discussion instead of, I know the answer. Cause I don't haha. It's an interesting topic.

So looking at this, I think maybe I should remove him at the bottom preparing to take off and then I can blur more of it?
I also tried to go at it from an angle where his head would be bigger and I don't think I've pulled it off in a way that exaggerates the motion.

I'm about to do some action scenes, so I really want to get some method for my motion down.

that looks cool. I guess another thing is reading the vertical scroll way, youll see the second part of the action first, so this might make sense.. Although I really do like how your panel reads the way it is too.

I do a mixture of techniques for my motion lines, these are all from my last episode, I tend to experiment a lot with how my motion lines look

Finally got around to changing that panel!

I'm starting to like using a white overlay for the speedlines. Also tried incorporating the lines into the lineart.

Definitely still learning, but I think it's an improvement!
