How do you do your screentones? (Shading)

Screentones are shading done in different ways. Such as it's applied to hair and backgrounds differently and is usually gray. It's done in manga often and different artist use it differently, so how do you use it?

When I use screen tone it's usually because of like zine influence rather than manga influence. Sometimes I like to offset my lines and colors to make something look screen printed and then I'll add a little screen tone in there to add to that aesthetic.

I've tired using it for shading a little for black and white projects, but I kind of like the look of straight line work better.

If you have Photoshop CS6 or higher, Kyle Brush screentones are the best. I use them for tons of stuff, and they're super cheap. I can't really recommend them enough, there's 96 to choose from and they function like any PS brush.

As for using them, I just add a little to give some texture to the art. I like how they give a rough and vintage-y appearance.

I don't use the common dotted screentone like the mangaka in Japan, I actually use noise screentone instead to avoid having my comic's tones look like a pixelated mess when I upload it online and print it. I have regular noise tone that I lighten for certain areas, a gradient pack, other non-dotted tones, and sometimes I make my own.
