How do you feel about nametags?

This is the only comic in which I have actually used them (because it is a joke comic, and I don't care). But I want to use them in future work, too...so I'd like to know how people feel about 'em.

I've got two scripts in progress where I've written sizeable chunks of story before realizing that I haven't intentionally introduced a single character (I don't know what to say, it just never enters my head). And rather than going back and adding filler to that end, I'm starting to think it might be more my style to just tag them when they show up, and keep the story going uninterrupted.

I mean, I'm not the only creator who does this...maybe it's time to accept that this is who I am...

I don't mind them if they suit the style/tone of the story. Like how John Wick had the emphasized captions, but I would not expect those in say Schindler's List.

I'm not too fond of them within a comic, but if they were at the end of an episode or were chapter extras then I wouldn't really have a problem. And if it fits the style of the comic, then it's not too big of a deal.

I do appreciate them because if there's a lot of characters I'll straight up forget who's who, especially with webcomics where I don't read it all in one sitting.

Well, they serve the purpose of shortening extra panels on your comic. The only time i could think of not adding nametags is when your character slowly introduces himself/ herself in the story or if the character says his/her name in a word balloon. But anyways, love the design of the name tags!

I use them too in the side-story for my main comic.

There's no real reason to not use them to be fair.
Only thing I can say about them is that I think they work better when the main cast already knows each other, or when later it is implied that they already know the name of the introduced character, and their conversation only went in something like

A: My name is Dora
B: Name's boots, come on vamonos!

I think you should do what you feel comfortable with. If nametags make life easier than do it.

Personally, I don't use them. I have one character whose name you won't find out until chapter 7 and I don't have a problem with it.

I like to be introduced to characters organically. I'm not a fan of nametags or self-introductions (particularly those that include personality info). I like to be shown, not told. If the story is interesting, then I can get over it though.

I was about to make these for my comic, but I was advised on multiple occasions to avoid it. The main reason why is because readers were already comfortable without them. There's like about 20 characters that I would consider to be in the "main cast," so doing name tags would be forcing the reader to remember 20 different names, and that would overwhelm them. Even if no one knew some characters' names for a couple of chapters, it wouldn't be such a big issue. Eventually, they'll get their shining moment to be memorable.

Idk how this would apply to smaller casts, but just be cautious with them. There are all kinds of media out there that I love and that I forget some characters' names.

I also believe that name tags are best used when characters already know each other or if there's a large cast. If there's a way to naturally bring up a name (introducing someone to a newcomer of a group, for example), then I say go for that.

Oh I go nuts for these things. I absolutely love them. especially when they have a little descriptor like these do or a mini bio. It's my jam.

In a comic with the right sort of tone they can fit really well. I loved them in the Scott Pilgrim comics, for example. I wouldn't use them in Errant specifically because I made that comic in a very cinematic style with practically no narration as a choice, but if I was making something where they fit, I'd probably have a lot of fun with them.

It really depends on whether they'd fit in with the comic. I can totally see them in a comic with a lot of games, racing or tournament arcs where there is an announcer anyways. Or with a school system.

Adventure comics or the like? Not so much.

I like them. I've liked them ever since I started reading One Piece. It adds a flair to the panels if done right.

I think they look cool on yours, makes it easy to refer back to if someone forgets their name and your inclusion of 'passionate youth' etc gives readers quick idea for the character personality
it's not unusual to see it in common media like videogames
games where my comic draws influence form, had also debated using nametags especially for monsters, especially further in where the mcs would challenge each other by naming the creatures ridiculous stuff

I use em too. Pretty helpful when we're first introduced to a character, especially if that character isn't referred by name. Y'know, unless the character is naturally introduced, but then you can do a cool introduction panel. I say go for it, especially if it doesn't break the flow.
