How does everyone color their comics?

I do all of the character ink and paint in Kamikaze. It's all done digitally. First thing I do is ink everything. Because of our 'animated TV show' style I really don't get to play with line weight that often. It's kind of a bummer, but there you have it.

Then I head into doing the flats...

Followed by the fun bit - SHADING!! First I lay down the rough areas of shading in a really obnoxious color. It's ugly on purpose so I don't get distracted by fussing with color.

Then I lay down some lines for fill so all the edges are crisp and clean. This is also done in an obnoxious color so I stay focused on getting the shape down.

At this point I pull up a shade guide that I made for each of the characters. They're messy and kinda unorganized but they look a bit like this:

Then I take the colors and fill them in to what they should be.

The artwork then gets a bit of color correction and further shading with gradients and such in compositing. It's a really long process, especially with crowds...ohgodthecrowds...but that's how it's done on our end for character work

I am really new to making comic strips, and I'm only on strip five in my series. But so far I've been colouring with markers. I spend all day at a computer, and when I am at home puttering around on my own hobbies, I like to avoid the computer wherever possible. So I pencil with a mechanical pencil, I ink with Micron pens, and I colour with Copic markers. At that point I have to use the computer to scan it in and get it web ready.

I use Photoshop, with standard brushes. For the color palette, I refer to the comic books/cartoons/illustrations that are closer to my style/project.
I keep it very simple, I do only a level in multiply mode for the flats (in this way you don't ruin the lineart) and another one, always in multiply mode, for the shading (if needed).
The lineart (pencils+inks) is done traditionally.

For my webcomic, I use photoshop to both draw and color the pages. I usually have a layer or 2 for the base colors, then I have multiple layers set to Multiply for different layers of shading, and I also use different layers set to Overlay for tones and highlights. And then I go back in for any additional effects and adding textures.

I color my comics (grayscale, traditionally and digitally), but I prefer to use traditional ink, (watercolor--> markers and paints) for color.

I use Paint Tool SAI for my comics; from lines to coloring. I draw all the lines, fill in the base colors like one would usually do, and then slap on some mad shading with Clipping on a Multiply layer. Then I create a bajillion more layers for backgrounds, effects, like smoke, ambient lighting, subtle shades, overlays, etc.

Sometimes I lose track of the stuff I dish out, so I group them. A LOT. I sometimes end up with over 100 layers in my workfile, but I feel like the end result is worth it!

Both with Likho and Two Faced coloured in photoshop with 1 layer with the default round hard brush at about 30 opacity...

My whole process usually takes place inside photoshop. Sometimes I might draw a sketch pass on paper and scan it but since I'm on summer break from school I don't have a scanner. For my comic, I've been using a method I like to call "Storyboard" shading. I use very stark values with minimal gradation. I draw the final ink lines, make a new layer under it, block in the shape with a base value, clean up the blocked out shape to fit the lines, lock the transparency, and then paint in my shading. For color, I make a color layer above the grayscale shading layer and set it to Multiply.

It's a somewhat quick method for me... but that might be because I previously spent an entire month solid doing storyboards until I was absolutely sick of drawing for like 3 months after that.

I might actually try a new method for the next part of my comic because I'm starting to feel this doesn't look as "clean" as other peoples' comic coloring techniques look.

I used to draw on paper then scan it. Now I do everything in Photoshop with an Intuos.

I'm really interested in learning more about your method.

I use maybe 2 layers before the text and speech bubbles are laid down. I can't imagine using 100!

I try to do as much of my process by hand as I can. I pencil in blue lead, ink with various brush pens and outliners, paint in black hair with a brush pen, scan in, then finish off everything in photoshop. At that point, it's the large black areas and grey tones, plus and effects I want to do. After cleaning up the scan, I duplicate the layer and set the new layer to multiply, then fill in with the colors I want. I'll sometimes do an additional layer on top of that for white lines I need to paint back in on black clothing or to separate black areas with a white line. Mostly, these are clothing folds that get lost when the area is filled with black.

i do black and when i find it much more faster for me, even thought it takes me a while to finished the comics XD
i use micron inking pens and a black prismacolor marker!

with my short comics i use the normal prisamcolor markers! they are shorter comics that can be colored unlike my main series.
