How is slice of life defined?

I used call myself definitively science fiction, except I've always been averse to writing (though still love to read) action plots. There might be SF themes like sinister surveillance, neighbors that are clones of subjects in secret labs, and aliens landing their spaceship in an otherwise normal neighborhood. But the plot is more "Can you get some more fried ramen and almond milk at the grocery store?"

Does anyone have this problem with scripting comics?

I sort of have this genre categorization problem with my own comic. Its currently just sitting as "slice of life" because its not necessarily hard sci-fi, or hard action, or hard romance, or hard comedy. Its a lot of different things under an umbrella of a coming of age story. :/

Its really more a concern with discoverability and potential audiences within Tapastic than a writing problem. I'd say use whatever mechanics needed that fit into your world to tell the story you want to tell.

Hmmm.. the way you describe it makes me remember Sakuratetsu Taiwahen by Fujisaki Ryu. It's 2 volumes of slice of life with scifi bg.

Yea allot like that actually. Actually just something I noticed, it seems like (compared to American TV and comics) it seems like there is allot more slice of life stuff even in superhero stuff.

I could be off base, as I read more manga.

I'm glad I'm not alone! Mines a Memoir comic - I'm converting a journal of a road trip into a comic and making it comedy. It's a memoir, that's funny (I think so anyway), that's also Canadiana, its also family bonding, its also dinosaurs.
I stuck it in slice of life but I'm not sure it fits there.

Makes me think this is a "misc" type category from lack of definition which isn't a good category to be in :\

Yea like that, where though SF I tend more to relationship-driven as suppose to macro-plot-driven. As in how a university student relates to a student, or a student relating to another student. As suppose to going off and saving the world. Some call it soft SF. Though I don't think it really fits.

Well, my comics is now horror-classified. Just because the early comics tended to have more creatures of the night in it. But... that gradually changed. And it has some "slice of life" aspects in it now. Just wondering where this might end and if it's gonna change genre... http://tapastic.com/series/WoD
