My comic started to gain more momentum after about 5 months posting, when it started to appear on trending. I did promote it on twitter, which probably helped as well. Last month it got featured on a curated list and that boosted the numbers up quite a bit! I've had a steady trickle for a bit now which I'm so grateful for!
I think having a consistent update schedule has helped us (we're a team of two, im the artist and my partner is the writer) And people seem to enjoy the art and characters. The art may be drawing people in, but I think people end up staying for the writing. We had a lot of "pre production" before we ever posted it here and I think people are responding well to how meticulous we've been with putting it together. He rewrote the prologue a few times because we wanted a good hook before settling in with some set up.
My partner wrote the whole thing ahead of time, so its up to me to do pages. We dont have to worry too much about where the story is headed as we already know. The writer made a good effort to make something significant happen in each page, or at least something notable, and to make a reader want to keep going.
A lot of you have mentioned too that romance is a popular genre, so I'm sure that helps a bit too. We've been trending in that category rather consistently which gets eyeballs on it. Getting to that point took a few months though, as we sat on a couple hundred subs for a while.
