I think something to keep in mind is webtoons is built for reading convenience so they are most likely to stay on longer. Tapas is built for creator convenience.

I agree. It's also easy uploading content here as opposed to Webtoons what with scheduling

Right and when you are on the apps, I think it's easier to switch between the comics that updated (as a reader) than it is on tapas. When I look, it's a nice vertical list that says which has updated vs not. Where on tapas, if I looked at an earlier ep for some reason... well now it's on my continue reading list... as is any other comic I happened to check out but I'm not interested in. It's the little differences that make a big difference to readers.

That's a function that's only on the app though and they don't cross speak. If I read something on the PC, it doesn't appear on the continue reading list on my app. Also, the updated vs not is very clear on the PC due to how the top bar is set-up.

(For a short period of time, Tapastic was actually a more popular search term than Webtoons.)

Tapas App Weekly Google Ranking:

*End of May 2018, SimiliarWeb did an overhaul of their ranking system, moving the Tapas app from the 2000s, to the 800s. However this should not be misconstrued as growth. From October 2017 to May 2018, Tapas app ranking use actually declined from #2082 place to #2240 place.

After the ranking overhaul, Tapas app ranking remained consistently the same from June 2018 at #835th place to May of 2019 at #887th place.

Recently app use increased significantly in June, with continued growth carrying into July. Growth is likely related to the platform's demographic focus.

One thing that can be said for sure is that Tapas is doing a better job at hosting both comics and novels in a similar fashion. In terms of design it's super pleasing to see that it doesn't really change much and it is easy to edit the episodes too without any issues. <3

Webtoons has the Korean-equivalent of Google backing it. I'm sure if that wasn't the case, Tapas would be in the lead.

Isn't this likely due to app growth is determined largely by number of downloads, since number of active users is a harder thing to pinpoint? I know that's how it works for app games ranking for popularity.
