How much gore is too much?

My webcomic is a dark fantasy and I draw a lot of inspirations as far as style choices from mangas such as Berserk and Vinland Saga. It has some pretty mature and disturbing incidents involving themes such disease, plague, death, war, torture, and so on.

I'm having a hard time distinguishing how much of these certain scenes should be visible as I don't want to break TOS for webcomic hosting sites.

At what point do I flat out censor a panel? I don't mind censoring as one of the perks for my Patreon is access to the uncensored content.

If you got any examples of the gore in your series then you should post them so this can be done quicker.

Ugh, Berserk level is hard. I think when someone can clearly identity guts as guts, not as a black/red mess splashing on the road, it's your call. Basically, no specifics and details. Half a head gone with a bullet? We don't see brains splashing and eye dangling, we see a red splash and a silhouette of the half a head or something.

Sadly I don't of my current webcomic but I can pull an example of one of my old comics I did back in 2009.

In most cases, people usually know what they're getting into when they read a story. If you're reading a horror story for example, you'll expect to see some scary or gory things. BL/GL- likely a lot of sex scenes. Etc, etc.

For those pages you posted, I'd add a "Content Warning: Gore" message at the very beginning of the episode(s). And if you go further, such as say a detailed corpse, or something that could be potentially triggering even to horror-lovers (rape, death of a child, to make some extreme examples), definitely mark the episode as mature and make very specific warnings at the beginning of the episodes.

Otherwise though, I really wouldn't think too much about it. I believe staff or a reader will let you know if they feel your comic needs a little censoring/mature labels!

From the get-go, I decided to throw a disclaimer in my story because of the violence and potentially, gory content, just to be in the safe side. My story have plenty of profanity and all the bad stuff. That's why I slapped the 18+ label in my cover because you may never know and especially, in today's climate. Y'know, plenty of people can take things out-of-context. I just want to tell my story as honest as I possible want without much of restriction in terms what works for my story.

They made us watch Un Chien Andalou at uni when I was younger. I've yet to see/read/watch anything that made me cringe as much as that eye-ball scene.

Some readers will be more sensitive than others, so just mark as mature.

My husband can't watch horror movies at all. I have to watch them on my own/with the dogs.

Like in general even the heaviest gore or topics don't bother me, but everyone's different.

However, when it comes to horror and the anticipation that comes with horror I AM THE BIGGEST WEENIE.

Seeing vegetables getting sliced is already too much for me.

Well, as long as the gory scene is not used just for a shock value or the main theme, it's still acceptable under a mature filter, of course.

I don't mind gore, if it's kept to an action movie level. Like The Expendables or Die Hard. Or in video games like Unreal Tournament and Doom.

But once it starts going into the horror level, or slasher films, or stuff like Saw I'm out.

Though my tolerance goes up when it's in black and white. Though manga like Berserk and Gantz are just too much for me. Attack on Titan pushes the limit but I can still read it.
