I'm sorry if I offended anyone. My intent is only to help Creators gain more visibility. If you have better options, please do share them.
Hey everyone, the name's Marty. I've been working in the creative industry as a Development Producer and Comic Creator for the last 15+ years. I wanted to take a minute today and talk about Promoting your comic.
Everywhere we look, we see creators asking for financial support on their Ko-fi or Patreon campaigns. It's a new norm and fans are often willing to contribute. With that being said, there is a time to branch out into commission and other form of commercial work....Truth be told, it is NOT at the beginning of your journey.
When starting a comic, remember that it is a work of PASSION. Make a comic because you are passionate about it. If you are only making it because you want to make money, the work is going to become mechanical and tedious.
Understand who your characters are. Remember, the best actor in the world is a writer. Know how your characters react to everything. Don't create any shortcut to satisfy your story. Let your characters tell the story by staying true to who they are. It sounds silly but this is a very important step. Your characters must become real so that it isn't the author who is talking. Avoid monotone speech.
Promote Promote Promote.
When you are happy with your work, when you have a decent amount of strips to keep the reader interested in your story, then you can start to promote your work. Remember, you need enough strips to keep the readers coming back. It's not good enough to have a subscriber. You want to have a fan who keeps on reading your work.
Go to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and keep on promoting your work. Ask your friends to keep sharing your comic. The best promotion you can get is word of mouth.
Here's a hint. Don't just promote whenever you have an update. Keep on pushing, create doodles of your characters, it doesn't need to be high quality material, just engage with your fans and offer them something to share.
Join https://topwebcomics.com and promote your work. Create vote incentives and ask your fans to vote for you. The higher the ranking, the more visibility you get. This is a way for your friends, family and fans to support you for FREE. The higher the visibility, the more traffic you get to your comic...which means, the more subscribers you get.
Topwebcomics is designed to discover new webcomics. Every time you update, ask your fans to vote. Every time you tweet, ask for your fans to vote..etc.
- Make some friends with your peers. Remember, the webcomic industry is a small one. We are all born storytellers. Your peers are not your competition. Be friendly and work together to promote your work. Have fun with it. Create some art share, do side stories together, non-canon crossovers. There are various Twitter groups that offer little activities such as Q&A, Topwebcomics has a Doodle Challenge - all activities that helps promote your work.
You don't need a lot of money to promote your comic. You can of course, but you can also have fun with it. Be creative. There is no wrong way to promote your work.
Not everyone can afford to become a Patreon or to donate financially. But everyone love the opportunity to support a creator they adore. Give them that chance to help you promote your work.
Later, when you have a decent amount of followers, you can go commercial. Your commercial campaigns will be much more profitable because you are reaching a much larger audience.
Love what you do, work hard and....money will come.
