TBH I don't see much of a difference between putting myself as a character and just using a fictional character, in terms of difficulty. My fictional characters are already reflections of me. But:
I know this is just a theoretical discussion, but I'm having a hard time understanding why anyone would even want to do this, whether with a self insert or a completely made up character. For someone like me, my goal as a storyteller is to get my message across while providing entertainment ('entertainment' being a very wide umbrella term here). That means if NOT showing one aspect of the character, or one part of their life, makes for a better story in that regard, I will not show it.
Even biographies tend to have a central theme. Someone might write about their life as a teacher; in such a case, even their childhood tidbits would have some relevance to their career -- how it affected their choice, what kind of help and obstacles they had along the way, etc.
