110% me. Funk/rap/hip-hop have been my drug and for good reason too.....
It's because the people who make the music are real life cartoon characters...
And the majority of them take drugs. :v
I dunno about Prince, but I can say that's the case for Funkadelic, Rick James, Snoop Dogg, and all that.
I consider drugs cheating when it comes to writing. I guess I'm cheating since I get my ideas from these guys :v . That said, aside from the beats, what makes me come back are the messages. While I think Death Row, Ice Cube, and all that are jokes (despite me loving their music) (Rick James was the real gangster don't @ me) (speaking of which don't get me STARTED on the new rappers), people like Prince or Bootsy Collins are poets (I keep coming back to "I Would Die 4 U", "The Future", "I'd Rather Be With You", "Groove Eternal". Beautiful music).
Also when I need a reminder about how to make my comics fun and out of this world, I just listen to old funk songs. They know how to make things sound like a party. My brain also creates goofy scenerios and fun loving characters. This is the one I come back to the most:
And this is the one that laid the bedrock for That Stick Isekai as it is today:
By the way. Listening to old funk music while reading really old comic books is a RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE lmao. Like peanut butter and chocolate I swear. Every writer looking to become a professional needs to do this. ESPECIALLY if they say old comic books are boring. People wondering how I managed to read over 400 old comics in a year? THIS is why.
Here's my playlist if anyone wants to try:
@smokesalty Thanks for making this thread btw. I'm always down to look for an excuse to spread the love of funk :v
