I guess I should do concept art

I mean, I don’t do it because the costume designs are in my head and I believe that I could draw them from my head, but I guess it is important for artists to do this while creating a story. I am curious about what I should do.

It helps because you will have to draw them over and over and even if you have a general idea, most people can't track every detail.

Sure you can go back an look at previous panels, but that is time consuming, especially since panels rarely show every detail. It can mean going through twenty pages to find the last time you drew shoelaces or the watch face.

It also helps give you a base reference for colors that change in different lights.

That doesn't mean you need to do a fully rendered piece. Personally, I need to get better at doing character and environment references, but I do a quick clothing sketch at the start of every major chunk where clothes change and it's super helpful.

Definitely yes, seriously, it's a life saviour. I agree with all @eliseswarren said, you just need to have a full drawing with everything you'll need to have at hand when drawing pages c: It doesn't take that long.

This is the character sheets I made for two of my characters (I do the same with almost all of them). As you see it's just a sketch, you just need to have the designs and the flat colors in place:D If I didn't make these I'd have forgotten so many stuff hasjkglsñdg so yeah, I highly recommend it

It's absolutely a great idea, and I recommend doing it. If you ever look at concept art created for games, comics, animated movies, etc. you'll notice there are dozens of different versions of the same character; with different clothes, hairstyles, posture, body size... It's about designing a look and tweaking it. You start with a general idea and then continue to refine it till you're satisfied with the end product. If you look up, your fav character is probably also a frankensteinian mishmash of five different concept arts put together. Rarely is a character's look and feel an instantaneous creation. But if that works for you, then this is just extra work.

I love games and looking at game concept art is really an eye-opening experience because many times the protags and other characters are almost unrecognizable in their earlier forms.

I don't do it because I think it's boring but then I end up having four different pages open at the same time so I can see all the details of a character/ location.

Any professional comic or animation have extensive character reference sheets for the sake of continuity, and these are people who are paid to produce fast. It's gotta be done for a good reason.

I think it helps a ton to have at least one nice polished character drawing that you can turn to and say "this is my character bible" for when you go back and check for consistency throughout your process. But the rest of my concept art for my comic is pretty loose, way looser than I would make for a client (and especially way looser than for animation where you have to be soooo concerned about doing a 360 turn that everyone on your team can understand). Like this is mine on what one of my characters is currently wearing, and it mostly covers where anchor points are for folds, and certain rules I made for myself for length and proportions (and I break those rules anyway, but at least I thought about them).

but for like interiors and stuff I mostly just have it written down. I already know they're not spending much time in their rooms past this chapter so ehhhh not necessary. This poncho though. Harriet's going to spend a lot of time in this poncho before she finally gets a real coat.

So really if you decide to draw it or not depends on how necessary you think it is--will it be a costume they're in a lot? Or just once scene? If it's just a scene then why bother.

I also need to get in the habit of doing this. Sometimes I enjoy it, sometimes it gets kinda boring. But I try to look at it as practice, even if it is loose and fast. That way, when I am drawing something to be presented to others, I feel like it will be better for having done this kind of practice/reference.
