Thank you! I believe I’ll try this brush first as I’m not sure if most downloaded brushes will be useable with Krita or Sketchbook which are the art apps I use.

Gotcha. I have a pretty stylistic approach to doing afro-textured hair as I tend to make natural black hair very rounded and cloudlike. When I do braids it's pretty much the same deal, I keep it round, but I also like to be real extra with bigness, that may not work for you, and as your style isn't painterly I'd probably avoid brushes that have natural brush patterns as they will be a bit jarring in your style, but I encourage experimenting. Mayhaps try and find or edit a round brush (or the one you typically draw with) that has a bit of line jitter instead so that you will still have control, but also get a little texture out of it.

That’s some excellent advice! Sketchbook does allow my to make my own brushes so I think that’s very doable, And thanks for describing the brush I would need, I’m very grateful for the help

No problem! I'm glad to see you are out here trying to diversify more and looking for ways to do it as naturally as possible <3!

It looks nice so far I like the brush you have used I think the hair needs to have a little more texture to it though, like to show more of the coils because it looks kind of flat but everything else looks nice :sparkling_heart::fire:

Yeah with the lightning you could see the texture of the hair, I still think that there should have a little more of the coils but then again I've seen my hair like that in a way with like something covering it for a period of time that looks nappy so it works with me

No no, I’m totally looking for assistance! I suppose my issue is I just don’t know how to make coils? Do you have a suggestion, I’ve looked up tons of tutorial but I feel like each one is different-

hmm, well you could look at coils as a literal object for an example

like for this one you see it as small

you could use that as looking at small tight curls it is like the same but one is an object you use and the other really isn't

Like for this short video I have found it is like that but with the coil/curl is more loosen

Here I have drawn out some examples to give you an idea

it is like what you have done with that drawing you've made,
what I have done was used the letter z and made it into small ones zig zagging back and forth until it gets small upwards

Ok , I think it is best to look at examples of types of hair and to transform it into your style just don't put yourself too hard of drawing that person

And another example you could look at the types of hair like this one

Thank you! Your demonstration really helped me with what I was missing! I think the layering will really help! I’ll try a bunch ^^

These are excellent steps in the natural black hair department. His hair in the top one looks kinda like he has finger waves which is a more groomed black hairstyle over natural look though, but definitely, a black hairdo! The pic that @Black_Conscious posted of John Boyega is the one most similar to the type of hair your probably going for with the character having short hair. Considering your style though, I think your 2nd attempt that's posted above this one is the one I'm feeling the most. The kinky hair up top looks good and the shaved edges on the side are a thing! The main thing I'd probably look at is his hairline as it looks to be kind of mixed and it has straight edges on the sides and natural ones on the top.

Just as an aside culture thing that doesn't have to apply for your character, but totally is a thing that goes the extra mile. A lot of black folks with short haircuts care very much about their lineup. This is anywhere the hair meets the face and the back of the neck (visible on your characters around the forehead and above the ears.) A good lineup is even or purposely designed to have a pattern and follows the curve of the forehead (if a beard, it will continue down and around the whole face. Check out pics of the barber from the new Pixar movie Soul.

There is a lot of fantastic black hairstyles in there) tailored to the face. The hairline is the barrier that keeps the hair from interrupting the face but also an opportunity to frame it and show off a lil personality. Bad hairlines in the black community can be a way to get teased.

Good job Rose!!

That is an INCREDIBLE Description and so helpful, I made his hair more rough where it meets the face because I thought it would look more natural (since this like a fantasy set in a less technology developed society, but I like the way You described it, and all the other characters look like they stepped out of pantean commercials so I’m going to give him a more even, nicer look (I think I’ll attempt a fade with no pattern for the neck and then when he assumes his prince duties I’ll give him a more extreme/beautiful hairstyle to signify the change to royalty ^^

This is what I have so far but it’s very rough, I’ve attempted to do some more wave patterns on the hair, I haven’t quite gotten his lips right so please ignore the shading on that ^^’ And thank you so much for the help, looking at hairstyles like this seems obvious now, but I would never know where to start without all the help I’ve received so thank you and @Black_Conscious!

That’s what’s up! I dig how your planning to have his look evolve based on where he is at in his obligation to duty. I think that’s a fire way to show transition and it totally makes sense :D!
He is looking good to me and I think you gave him gorgeous lips in your precious sketches, but understand the whole process and trying things out part of character crafting. Yayyy! Glad my 2cents are helping :D!

I’m enjoying your story thus far too and looking forward to what’s next and of course seeing him drop as well!
