i think the new panels and their use of patterns and wild colors add a hint of chaos to the mood, while the old ones seemed more focused on shock factor. if you want to go for a more surrealistic horror feeling with your comic the new pages convey the mood much better!
if you want to keep shock factor imagery in the comic though, i'd look at some of junji ito's stuff if you haven't already. he's an expert at building up tension to make the reveals extra frightening !
just a suggestion, since your comic is traditional i recommend writing all the text down first and building the bubbles and art around it, it'll definitely help reduce cluttering and increase readability.
