I will agree with @allenT on Kaiji. After a few series "Liang ping dora dora" literally became a meme in our household, but it was an anime that was really exciting to watch

Also Squid Game's premise is pretty much Battle Royale, but Battle Royale is a violent controversial action, and I haven't seen Squid Game yet to compare them but maybe check it out too.

You could try the 20th Century Boys movie series. There are legal English releases of the films on DVD, I don't think they are on streaming.

Without spoiling anything, Squid game is a little bit brutal. I mean since it is about death games it must be, but what made me sad are character interactions

It’s very low budget. They had to change some things probably because it wasn’t in the budget.

I sort of want a remake, be it live action or animated.

Aw, that's pretty disappointing. The manga was a gem! I hope it gets an anime though, it'll probably get much more recognition that way. And it might not be impossible either, the author's other manga, Pluto, was getting an anime last year.

If the budget is tight, i doubt anime will happen....but anime usually brings more attention so maybe? I remember hating when i see my fav animes at the moment ( Noragami for example) stopped with production, but manga had enough content for more seasons

Very true! Remakes are rarely done well so Fruits basket was a very pleasant surprise.

Since I watched most of the series, my point still stands Kaiji and Battle Royale should be something you'd probably like
