A Tamagotchi! :astonished: You can store all your souls inside it like little Virtual pets...
Compact that activates when it opens and shows its mirror
Stopwatch

Lighter
Fidget cube
(don't go with pen, that's very Percy Jackson right now)
Altoids tin (small variety)
safety pin
handheld heater/AC remote -usually have 2-4 buttons and are pretty small
car alarm fa-mob thing (key fob i think is what theyre called)
step-counters

How about a pendant? Those ones that can be opened and you can put a picture in. That way you have a button but instead of opening the engravings can start glowing or change color when activated.

I did think about making it a pendant, but it seemed a bit too small. I've yet to see a photo locket be bigger than a quarter.

A solar watch. A compass. A hair pin. Asthma inhaler.
A matchbox. Rubber poop.

Maybe some decorative hair sticks (the ones often confused for "chop sticks," but are are used to eat with at all.)

Oo! A monocle! That has a little button where the chain meets the glass? Or just sunglasses/glasses that have a little button

Armband with what looks like a jewel but is really the activation and either changes colors/shape/glows/something like that?

A key chain? You can have a hay day with those

A flash light? They come in small sizes, and many styles.

A small hat with some kind of accouterment on it that can be pressed?

Those are all I can come up with now. A pill box? They have buttons sometimes. Open it and 7 days a week of magic! (Okay, I'm joking there...but still...)

A light bulb

(i need 20 characters to post so don't mind this part)

Cofffin shaped - candy box/ ring / forehead tiara / hole in chest like ironman /belt buckle / coaker-necklace / backpack / bracelet / hair braid / eye patch / earring /

Here's a dumb idea I had... A Flashlight. It's small, and has a button on it. That, and you could probably use the light beam to do something interesting like revealing hidden objects or something if you wanted to.

I am considering a flashlight or a lantern actually. it combines a lot of things people have suggested.

Silly putty. Or mini container of play dough. My students carry these around all the dang time and no-one cares. Doesn't have the button thing tho...

Compact mirror, stress ball, healing / precious stone (jade, sapphire), compass, antique scissors or key, a chess piece.

That's all that came to mind. Good luck.

Where did the device originate?
Is it from an old world or the new world?
Does it normally pair with other devices?
(Just questions that might help design the device, you don't have the answer these.)

an old fashion candle snuffer could look cool paired with the lantern.
Man I love old fashion lanterns. Be sure to check out anchor oil lanterns! They're designed to protect the flame from water so it might spark some inspiration!

A Turkish spindle! For spinnning fibers!!! It winds the fibers into a ball as you go and you take off the bits. I’ll get a pic later
