Dec 2018

So I've got an issue - I am waay slower at drawing than I feel I should be. Mostly because I'm too perfectionist (and also because I don't focus enough). So I'm creating a challenge for myself that will force me to be un-perfectionist and stay laser-focused in order to meet what to me is an absurd deadline.

I'm announcing it here to keep myself accountable - I will have a complete, self-contained one-shot comic published on Tapas within 14 days. Even if "life" interferes and makes me spend my time doing a hundred other unanticipated things, I won't give myself more time. Even if I don't finish it or end up thinking it's nothing but garbage, I will publish what I have anyway and announce it here. That's a promise.

To make things harder on myself, today counts as the first day, even though I have nothing but a vague, half-baked story outline and maybe 3 hours before I go to bed.

My future self will likely marvel at my present self's insanity and loathe this decision for the next 13 days. Well too late, future self, your credibility's on the line now :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: :clock1:

Excited to see what comes of it! Will be keeping an eye out ;D

YOU CAN DO IT!!

And then you can do a 24 hour comic! 24 pages in one day. ^_^

Good luck!

You're either gonna be Kamina or Simon by the end of this. Believe in the me that believes in you!

Thanks everyone

@Cavechan just looked that up and realized it was a thing o.o if people can do that in 24 hours, then I'll definitely have to manage in two weeks XD

I believe in you! Amazing things happen when you put yourself on a deadline. You can do it!

Finished all the thumbnails (>u<)d , looks like it's going to be 21 pages.

I think I've taken maybe ~40 minutes on average to thumbnail a page, which does seem rather slow. Granted, I did also make up the dialogue and some of the plot details while thumbnailing since I didn't make a script first (is that bad practice?). TBH I'm somewhat unconfident in the story, but oh well I guess that's the point, will move on to sketches tomorrow (while not forgetting to celebrate, merry Christmas btw ^-^).

Tired now, must sleep x.x

Finished the sketches

I timed myself for 45 minutes per page, although I often went over. But just having a timer helps. Being more conscious of which details can be omitted from the sketch and handled just during inking has also helped.

I'll go ahead and jinx myself by saying I seem to be on track to complete this in less than 14 days.

DONE. I don't know what kind of nonsense I created, but it's done XD

Despite getting really burned out and procrastinating on the last few pages for a couple days, I still somehow managed to finish two days early. Mainly because inking took a lot less time than I thought and I decided to color in black and white.

Part of me was definitely loathing past-me's decision after the first few days , but I learned a lot from this, including:

Summary

  • most of my time spent inking is normally spent making sure lines are (perhaps unnecessarily) clean, and by embracing a "sketchier" inking style I can ink significantly faster
  • how to color more minimally and efficiently (at least in black and white) by not taking colors too "literally". For example, in the beginning I colored the MC's hair dark since I envisioned it being black, but towards the end I realized that just because it's "supposed" to be dark doesn't mean I have to color it that way. Saved lots of time and kinda looked better too.
  • how to decently draw background vegetation en masse (something specific I've struggled with a lot before)
  • that I can often get away with making sketches quite a bit looser than I'm used to without problems, thus also saving lots of time

Any critique / feedback is appreciated, especially on storytelling aspects since I think I'm not very good at that.

Lastly, I want to give a shoutout to @monotone_ink - it's hard to explain exactly how, but reading some of his work is both what gave me the idea to do this and what made me believe I could. And the b&w coloring and sketchy-ish linework are both partially inspired by his art style as well. Thanks Monotone ! Everybody go check out his series!

Oh wow, congrats! I can't wait to read it after work!

(And yes, monotone and his work are amazing @u@)

Oh, and another thanks to everyone who encouraged me here. I think it's safe to say I wouldn't have finished it if I didn't hold myself accountable to the forum, so I'm really grateful for that too

A big big congrats to you and the completion of the work!

Considering how much you've learned about yourself through this challenge, I would also highly reccommend other people to try out stuff like this--they're kind of like self-run boot camps and are great for getting introspective on your own work process.

Also, I'm extremely honoured to be a motivator for your work--I'm crying in anime at this point.
