If Disney offered to buy your IP today, would you accept? (+poll)

I remember I was chatting with a friend about this a while back.

I told him that "I'd let Disney buy my stuff for at least one corn chip on the vague hope of getting a DRAGOONS based theme park ride." To which my friend responded, "Come one, man! You've gotta have more standards than that! I'd sell my soul to them for at least two corn chips...."

YEAH, I will sell a singular IP to them for at the minimum 5 million dollars so long as it's not some work-for-hire shit. They can have the rights to one story and the characters contained within that story.

If I don't like what they do with them, no big loss for me, I can always come up with more stories. Most of my stories aren't tied together nor do they share the same universe anyway.

Considering the fact that Disney can’t even respect there own IP I it would take many blue moons and a lot of begging for me to sell any IPs to them.

They’ve lost a lot of passion since Walt’s death and they continue to loose more and more. They’re more interested in making money then making good films. Starwars is a great example of this, as they had no script and no plans with the franchise when they started. I’d also say that they’ve treated the Marvel CU poorly. And the Disney remakes are truly nothing but cash grabs and going so far as to ignore the writers and animators that made these original pieces like Lion king. Giving them no say in the remakes and no credit for creating the OP in the first place.

Hell, fifty shades was given more respect then a lot of Disney movies and they’re trashy porn novels.

Disney has disappointed me too many times for me to trust them with my IP let alone anyone else’s. Besides, if Disney is offering that must mean other producers would offer as well, and I’d be happy to shop around for people that respect the franchises they buy.

Oooh, see I didn't even think about that. If nothing else, you could pitch your idea to a company you actually like and say "Disney offered to buy this for x million dollars" as a selling point~ ^^

Oof, thinking back I would also want to negotiate a lifetime percentage royalty for any physical product they put out with my IP attached to it.

But yes, I would for sure negotiate something with them to acquire my series. Even if they butcher it. That goes for any of the big companies. Any potential fans would probably catch news of the original source material/creator and come my way anyway.

I mean, you’ve got that point of disrespecting down. Before JK Rowling contracted with Universal, Disney offered to make Harry Potter rides for the Magic Kingdom. They did horribly with her stuff, and she gave them one more chance. She came in and they offered a stupid ride similar to the spinning tea cups called, The Dumbo Dore. She left and contracted with Universal. Hopefully that story is true. I researched some of it, but the internet is a swamp of incorrect information. Honestly, I wouldn’t put it passed Disney to do something this dumb. If it’s true, then they botch IP’s in every corner of the market.

Nope. Honestly, I'm fine with the money I'm making right now. And my comic is something I take pride in. With it being sold I'd feel like a little... you get it.

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot because I’ve been getting a lot of interest and people contacting me about one of my IPs.

My first instinct is to say no but the closer I am to it and having the opportunity to develop other pitches AND being in the middle of a not so great financial situation with carpal tunnel the more I think “maybe”. But I’ve also said no to a pretty good option so far because of some controversy surrounding the company so it looks like I’ll probably stick to my guns.

But it’s getting harder and harder still whenever I look up a company I had been interest in and then it turns out they’ve already been bought by Disney

I got too much gay and violence in my story, they would ruin it. So nope. I'd put up the hard fight and never give in. I'd put it in writing for after my death that it may not be sold to them specifically.

A good point made here. Disney is a family company so most of my IPs if they where ever truly interested in them would be seriously censored or rewritten. Aliens and strange creatures can die, sure, but no dead humans are allowed, especially no dead kids.

You can have gay characters but they can’t really dooooooo anything? (Holding hands is for degenerates) I got some gay and bisexual characters in my stories and I wouldn’t want them touching them with there weird love/hate relationship for them

Blasting off people's heads with guns, meta humor, and tons of blood is not the same as having characters who are open to the audience about their sexuality when it's not hetero-cis. So, no. Disney is off the table for my works.

Fair enough. I plan to write a 21+ story that's got the gore and language. Mainly because I wouldn't want Disney to have control over my story.

I also wouldn't trust Disney with their agreement to contracts. They have a bad history of agreeing to something in writing and then not doing it, or doing the opposite. The way lots of large businesses are done and handled, at least in Disney's case, just doesn't catch my interest. I also likely wouldn't want to sign on with "a netflix original" or anything to that degree either until the water's been tested more than currently.

Indeed. If I had to choose between DC and Marvel, I would pick Marvel. I feel my OC fits there perfectly.

Disney owns a lot more than just the stuff associated with disney. They own A LOT of film and television production companies that make a large variety of work. Not just all ages content.

For example the Hulu show The Handmaid’s Tale technically belongs to Disney.
