I'm new to webcomics, could you give me a few tips? Should I color? Can I make Fanart?

Hello guys.
As the title says, I am new to this.
I am not good at coloring, and it takes an awful load of time. Is it bad to make my first webcomics black and white? Every webcomic I saw here is colored tho.

Also, am I allowed to post fanfics / fanarts here? Like, make a one shot of a Star Wars fanfic, or whatever.

I'd like to start off by doing that before I start with my own original stories and scripts.

Just don't turn on monitization and you should be fine on that.

Oh, thanks for the tip. I never knew there was an option for monetization here on Tapas. I thought only on Webtoons

Fanfics are fine if you don't earn money wiht them.
About the color, the best way is to make something you like to do, especially for your first comic
So if you don't want to color it, just don't do it !

There are many examples of good, popular B/W webcomics here, as A Matter of Life and Death. It all dependes on your skills to create mood, depth and draw attention using it. I think is easier to do it with colors, but if you don't feel so comfortable, go for B/W.

don`t worry, is not bad to make a comic in black and white. If you want to make it in color and you feel umconfortable with your current skills in color, i would first recommend you to practice until you feel you are ready.

I would also recommend making two separate comics. One for the comic you're eventually going to create, and another for one shots.

This way, you can keep your personal comic "clean" in that it's not cluttered with unrelated works - such as the Star Wars one shot you mentioned.

Thank you friend, the problem is that, besides not being good at coloring, I actually don`t like coloring xD
Since I was a little kid, I aways did Black and White art, probably because of manga influece.

You should start drawing b/w if that's how you enjoy working
Poorly colored comics looks way worse than well-done b/w or greyscale, and color theory is difficult unless you naturally have great talent for it T-T (I've been working with color for years and still struggle a lot with background planning and sometimes even coloring backgrounds for stand-alone illustrations)

That said, working with color can also be super fun and rewarding and it does get quicker and easier. I can make a full-color page of an on-going comics (without shading) almost as fast as a nice looking (not just line-art) b/w page

Both full-color and partial does make your comics pop more which can help attract more readers (or build a more appealing portfolio), so I can highly recommend trying it out at least. If you really don't enjoy it, don't worry b/w comics can do great just don't stay away from color because it can look (really, really) awkward while learning!

My one piece of advice for making a monochromatic (one colour, normally black) comic, is so make sure that everything pops. Try to make the backgrounds really subtle compared to the characters and foregrounds so that everything pops out without needing colours to do it.

Yup, having a monochromatic color scheme can save you a lot of time if you don't have a full grasp on color theory. A lot of webcomics are made this way because it still looks classy even though it doesn't take as much time/effort as making one with full color

colour= yes if you can do it cause people love colour, also making a web-comic is a great way to learn how to colour
fanart= you can make this but you can't monetise it with ads and you will forever be stuck as the guy who makes fanart

Hey. I am also relatively new creator. But I have been a reader a majority of my life and from a reader's perspective, while colour is a cool bonus, my love for a story doesn't depend on it.

As for fanart, I have seen few around and as long as you don't monetize them, it's fine.

There are also forum threads where you can share your fanart. These are just few that you can check out!

Some fans work so hard to finish their gift for some artists but the drawings get buried so quickly on their profile walls, never to be seen again.
