Nov 2019

My comic (In The Loop) is now 20 pages long, and thus has reached the first major breakpoint in the story: the end of Session Zero!

This is also (in my opinion) the first cohesive chunk finally done, so if you're curious about it, this is a pretty good idea of what it's gonna be like going forward. If my comic was a movie, this is basically the title card after a 10 minute intro lol

I'm going to be taking a 1.5 week break, and resume posting on Sunday, November 10, and really kicking things off with the beginning of Session One!! In the meantime, however, I will be active in this forum thread, answering any questions anyone might have (within reason, of course lol) and generally trying to meet the community!

This my first comic (in general, and on tapas) so I'm looking forward to learning new techniques and gaining any advice you all might have for me, as well as discussing the comic itself, of course! Depending on the response I get, I may even start uploading pages more often (i.e. 3 times a week), so definitely get a word in if you're interested :3c

Anyway, one last thing before I sign off for now, a question for you all! Since this is just the first break, let's start with a simple one:

Ashe or Emy?

Leave your answers in the comments!

Well... I guess this didn't do very well, but I'm still gonna bump it.

Any comments or thoughts, feedback or questions are appreciated! Even if you just wanna say hi

Hi brudda! I don't know who either are so Ashe, what I'm answering to I don't really know.

You may want to do something about the scanning, cause I can barely read some of these pages the way they are. Good luck, seems like a cute story.

Ah- I was worried about that haha. I thought that most of the text was legible as it is... could you point out the specific pages that looked bad?

there's not numbers but:

What, Want, Wrote, Spoiler, Where and I stopped reading after that. Too much is unreadable or sloppy to look at. The character designs are cute, but the type of story isn't enough to keep me that invested, but I'm sure there's an audience out there for something like this.

Try to work with the brightness and contrast if you have a program like photoshop or even windows photo editor, something I used to do when I did my comic strips on scans is place a piece of plain white printer paper behind, but I don't really recommend using note book paper for posting comics on the internet if I'm going to be really honest.

Ashe!!

To be honest I hesitated before starting to read because of the image quality, but looking past that the story was fun. I like how dynamic the scenes and interactions feel, I think the sketchy look of the drawings helps with that. Still, the bad quality of the images (blurry, wrinkly paper) is really not helping here, which is kinda sad :frowning:

I'm glad you enjoyed it! TBH that sketchy, grainy quality is kinda what I'm going for- weeds out all the readers who are merely there for eye-candy and not the goofs and characters haha

...Though I guess it is apparent that I still need to step up my game. The later pages I have saved up definitely look better, but I won't be abandoning the notebook paper any time soon, I just need a better method for digitizing them. (these were designed to be as low-effort as possible so I could keep producing them quickly lol)

Sketchy drawings are fine (and when executed properly they can look fantastic), ruled paper is a matter of style and personal preference, but bad image quality makes it look as if very little effort was put into presenting this to the readers.

Honestly, if it wasn't because of your forum post I would have never given your comic a chance, because on a first impression it looks careless, which in my experience usually means that little effort went into the rest of the production as well. Why would someone put a lot of effort into the story and art, but neglect the final imaging step? I think the way your comic is perceived on a first impression is crucial to have people interested. After all the first thing you see is the art, and then you may or not stay for the story.

Yeah... if I'm honest, I could scan them all in, but at the same time I kinda like the grainy photo effect? I'm not sure... it would definitely benefit from more detailed digitization for sure. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though! Brevity is clearly playing well into it... but I also hope to tell a cool story with it too haha

Any other thoughts?

I don't mind it either, but it does interfere a bit with the text, and that is a problem haha
it does add to that... old film grain feel, though

Well... given how this turned out, I think I'll keep uploading twice a week. I'm happy I got a few responses, and in the future I'll be working to improve the visual quality of the scans and text! The next page goes up in a few hours, so I look forward to a fun adventure with everyone!
