I just found something fun floating around in a neglected folder of my computer - it's a moodboard I created for my first webcomic The Art of Monsters, back in 2014!
It is a fantasy story set in Tang dynasty China, so i looked at lots of inkbrush paintings and works inspired by the novel Journey to the West. I also added in some of my favourite black and white art by Ryan Andrews and some German Expressionist influences.
I thought I'd have a go creating one for my new comic, Earth in a Pocket, which is a fun mixture of retro sci-fi and my love of archaeology and art history. So big time inspiration from films like Forbidden Planet, but also inspiration from the weirdest corners of nature and drawings and sculptures of monsters from cultures around the world.
Oh, and Tintin gets to be in both. Because I love me some ligne claire art style. And one day I hope to be half as good at slapstick as Herge was.
What are your artistic influences?
