Inktober Drama on Twitter

There aren't really rules to inktober. Inking digitally isn't "against the rules."

This one tweet is just the guy who started it saying "Here's my reasoning for why I think that inking digitally defeats the purpose of why I started inktober."

He even says that no one's going to stop you from doing it any way you want to! I did some pieces digitally for Inktober last year. I'm against acting like traditional media is inherently superior to digital media, and he absolutely implies that here and I don't agree with that -- but I don't think it super matters if the guy who started a drawing challenge has an opinion about the best way to do the challenge.

I think "If you're able, I'd encourage you to try using pen and ink for this challenge, in order to practice working with a permanent medium!" would've been a better way to word a similar sentiment.

I personally don't listen to traditional art only elitists who think you're a bad artist for doing digital art. Both are still hard to do, both still require years of practice to get good at, you're still making visual representation of something just with a few extra tools to make it less difficult on you (the undo shortcut is a fricken lifesaver) No challenge like Inktober should have rules attached, the point of them is to have fun and tackle an event by any means necessary. If people have a problem with it, block them and ignore their ignorance because they're not worth the aggravation lol. They'll shut their mouths when they know no one's listening eventually

Well it is called inktober, so using real ink would make technical sense. But do whatever you want, I've seen people throw out full coloured illustrations and partially finished sketches for inktober. In the grand scheme of things whatever medium you use really doesn't matter. If you get gruff just throw out a "whooops. Oh well. ¯_(ツ)_/¯"

I am reading this thread right now and realizing I used to be a traditional art elitist.

When I was like, what, 15-16?

I changed. A lot. In fact I gave away all the traditional materials I had left in my room collecting dust just a couple weeks ago.
I have hope that most of these people will change and gain a more accepting approach too. And the ones that won't aren't worth our time.

This has always been an event that really brought the art community together and I just hate that it's starting to create a split... I bet most people would just do their thing but I would hate for anyone to recieved comments about how "it's supposed to be traditional only" because of this.

It's so bizarre, isn't it inktober meant to challenge and improve your skill? So whether you chose to do it digitally or traditionally, it really shouldn't even matter ;/

I also feel like there is more to inking than just the application of ink to paper. There is something really interesting about just working with black/white (or monochrome) composition. You have to really think about the values. The way I construct a black and white comic is going to be very different than how I do lineart for a comic I mean to color. I think that part of inktober is just important as if your pen has physical ink or is a stylus.

I don't know why people want to feel high and mighty just cause they use traditional mediums. I use traditional mediums, you don't see me saying stuff like this.

Doesn't working on either medium indirectly make you better at the other anyway? Sigh, some people.

I was under the impression that digital was acceptable. For my first Inktober I was only going to use ink and paper because I don't draw digitally anymore.

Didn't the official inktober website say that digital inking was allowed? I mean like, I am of the opinion that digital inking kinda goes against the spirit of inktober, which is in part about using a difficult and unforgiving medium, but like, that's just me, and putting your foot down like this is kinda dumb.

Mehh, it seems to me that the guy just merely expressing his personal opinion, and imho he did have a point. I admit that I do use ctrl Z and use transform tool to correct proportions all the time, I don't feel guilty about it at all tho

He isn't banning anyone from doing it digitally, but whatever said on the internet just have a tendency to get blown out of proportion for some reason cos all you see is text without hearing the voice tone so it's all open to individuals interpretation.
Some people see it as an attack to some ideas and got upset, but some just feel indifferent about it.

I wouldn't call him a traditional elitist because he's done plenty of digital prep and coloring work. (Though yes, he certainly leans traditional in his workflow)

Looking back on the how Inktober started he's been pretty consistent on this. He said in the Inktober History video that he used to be really tentative with inking and the whole purpose behind the challenge was to become more confident with his preferred pen. Given this origin, it would make sense that he prefer people not work in a medium where an immediate undo is an option. As he noted that's not to say that you can't do it digitally, but I think it's worthwhile to consider the intentions behind the challenge before criticizing the statement.

After being able to read the twitter post properly (my work computer gives me limited access to twitter), the amount of word twisting in the response section is kinda gross? The OP never said only traditional inks counted, that's just the preference, and yeah traditional is technically more challenging with it's limitations. I totally understand what they mean since I used to use ctrl - z like an addict when I used to do digital, and it made me lazy. (before you witch hunt, I'm not saying digital artists are lazy. It was only making ME in particular lazy) Everyone is acting like this person is forcing everyone to conform when they literally just said traditional fits better with the spirit of Inktober.

Anyways, I still stick by my statement to do whatever you want. If you prefer digital then go for it, I highly doubt the person who started Inktober will invalidate your work, or try to take it down in any way. I don't think they will lose any sleep over it.

Since at least mid-2013, Twitter has been the digital frontline of a culture war that's been raging for decades now. Anyone who ventures on to that site should take that into consideration. Even the smallest, seemingly insignificant disagreements will be fought as though the future of civilisation itself hangs in the balance.

I saw the tweet it only says that it's more challenging the traditional one. I think it's just different lol, in my case it would be way more challenging to ink digitally even if I use ctrl+ z because I still don't know how to make the brushes look more... natural? lol.

It depends on your program, but the way that natural-looking brushes are made tends to involve high-resolution scans of brush/pen marks, and some sort of scatter effect. Or that's what I was able to learn from disecting the DAUB brushes for CSP.

doesn't surprise me that twitter went into a crazy fight over nothing -_-, I would say that digital programs are like a brush or a colour, a tool that you can use, it's a great and awesome tool but a tool none the less, though it shouldn't be your only tool, better to have more then one string on your bow don't you think?, but saying that it shouldn't be used is really dumb =/
like saying I can't use a marker or a brush for a painting instead I should use a crayon or my hands dumb

make random patterns(like a round spiky ball) and play with texturing and others effects (I use Photoshop mostly and create my own brushes), natural is mostly the absence of textures and imperfections in the brushes since in real life brushes and any other painting tool leaves a texture/imperfections behind, be it the paper or the grooves in the paint, so try emulating those imperfections and textures and your good to go (hope it helps =) )

Yes, well, it's not fine that people are putting other stuff into the tag "inktober": it's just gonna make it crumble and become a pile of trash for the exposure that the tag brings. So you're totally free to make colored pages, and unfinished sketches in october, just don't put them under the tag. It's a challenge in which people should force themselves onto a medium to learn more about that.
