i dont think There was a War has, so far, actually included a male character (most are genderless). It's a fantasy following two young women, a giant/fomor and a witch, falling in love in the middle of a war between their peoples.
balor is a nuerotic, tiny giant whose life so far can be summarised by the phrase 'out of the frying pan, into the fire.' in indentured servitude in the fomor army with a magic eye that destroys whatever it sees, balor is complicated and bitter, but still manages to find beauty in life.
cath is a young, defiant witch and prisoner of war at the underground fomor keep. she is an extremely gifted seer, but the future-knowledge gets jumbled in her head, causing her to speak relative nonsense half the time. shes decidedly positive, working hard to spread joy and light among the small community of captive witches - but shes quick to temper, and carries a lot of baggage shes struggling to ignore.
also, some of my favourite female characters on tapastic:
Hyppolite and Aella - Amazonomachy
in mythology-era europe, hyppolite is the daughter of the chief of Aella's tribe, and eventually queen to a large, peaceful republic. shes quite blunt, with a complicated relationship with her family and believes shes cursed - as do half the people that know about her, but the other half think shes a demigoddess. dunno which is true yet.
Aella is her most loyal friend, and eventual wife (spoilers!). shes stubborn and determined - especially when it comes to Hyppolite. shes very introspective and thoughtful, with a strong moral compass to match Hyppolite's.
(sweet, soft) Chinue - Roll Real Roll
chinue is very shy and reclusive, with low self esteem and high anxiety - flung headfirst and with little warning into her first D&D campaign by her friend. shes full of adorable expressions and very easy to sympathise with as she stumbles her way through the complicated and intimidating game.
