He is a bit too murder happy to be a hero or even an anti-hero
My two protagonists are Callis Nomene and Novus Igneus
Callis is hated by society because he is of mixed heritage. His father comes from a race that was created by the race of his mother to be slaves, but a couple of centuries ago they rebelled and left. Most people in the Kingdom see them as traitors and criminals, but most haven't ever seen a Saevus around. Callis, being half Saevus, became an easy target for all the indoctrinated hatred. Instead of lashing out Callis wants to be part of society and strives to be the best at anything he does, all under the rules and laws. He despises his Saevus side because he was taught to hate it by most people who hate him. He is a self-hating law-abiding citizen. Half of his blood is from the Kingdom Nobility and that makes the contrast even harsher. Callis wants to be part of the status quo and defends it, or at least defends an idealized version of it he holds dear.
Novus is a lowborn, meaning he was born outside nobility and in theory shouldn't have magic. The divide between Noblemen and Peasants is mostly defining by the ability to channel magic or the lack of it. Novus is a lowborn who not only can channel magic, but thanks to his father's connections (A very wealthy merchant) he became the first to assist the Royal Academy of Arcane Sciences, meaning he is the first official Arcanist to come from a lowborn family. He is a rock in the gears of a society that has been stagnant for centuries. Novus wants to up-end the social structure as he wants to spread the knowledge of the Arcane Sciences to everyone, teaching to other lowborn with Magic potential (That are more than they seem, with highborn ancestors because of affairs and less than savory methods). Novus wants to shatter the status quo to pieces and build something new.
