Right. This thread isn’t directed toward anyone that wasn’t in the previous thread as people who were not would not understand why it is being brought up. I’m not a fan of Lovecraft so I never bothered to dive that deeply into the lore, horror terrors and other such things are as far as my interest leads.

Minecraft -- Lovecraft am very influential cultural figure. Of course people are gonna discuss his life. People also talk about the personal quirks of Tolkien, Poe, and Shakespeare. That just how it is. Lovecraft am mebbe quirkier than most, so more conversation happens on that front.

Disney wasn't friends with hitler lmfao that was a rumor made up by unionizers to badmouth him and cause hitler really liked disney cartoons.

Also HP lovecraft was a mental case and people hated him when he was alive, it wasn't "the time period", Lovecraft was nutters and was bad mouthed back then. He was amazingly good at making enemies and if the internet existed during that time, they'd make a callout post about him.

But to bring all that up? Does it even matter in the long run? When I think about that I think about the monsters, his personal life may be an obsession to some, but it’s ok not to go on and on.

People just thought way different back then and had different values.

If he lived and did what he did back then nowadays then sure it would be terrible according to our standards nowadays.

I hate mentalities like this because it excuses the horrible and never justifiable behavior of previous generations. I do not care if as a society discrimination against people of color, immigrants, the mentally ill, and lgbtq+ individuals was normal, it is still unacceptable and horrible. I get it. I really do. There will always be a stark disconnect because it truly was a different time. But it sounds like an excuse to me.

Also, I want to say I'm not giving Walt Disney, or even Disney as a whole a pass. They made some racist ass animations back in the day and Walt's associations were dubious. I guess the difference between them is, there was more to Walt Disney than the racism and supposed "Hitler associations". Doesn't really change anything, but you know. it's there.

Why would it not be okay? Lovecraftian horror am still important part of pop culture. And pop culture have important function to civilization. More understanding always better.

Also I expressed how cool it is that BAME reinterpretations of the genre were happening to make it more accessible. Apparently that was wrong too 🤷‍♂️ Apparently the author is entirely dead, and thus we should only ever use that literary framework to discuss anything, ever.

Isn't the monster boyfriend genre different from eldritch horrors far from human capacity of understanding, though, which is about poking around but definately avoiding the monster once it's found? I'd wait until the video is done but just trying to get this cleared up before the thread closes.

edit: Nevermind, I got it that it's about the problem of just taking the stories as is with no adaptation, not exactly about "hey don't use cthullu that's bad"

The reason why his horror is so good is because it feeds on his fears of minorities. Basically, imagine racist rambling... but well written. That's Lovecraft.
