Japanese Webtoons?

Just something I've been wondering about for a while. It seems like South Korea is absolutely killing it right now, but it makes me wonder about Japan. The only Webtoon-esque place I've seen for Japanese web comics is a place called Comico. So far as Webcomics in general go, I think I've heard of some indie artists placing stuff on Pixiv (like Watakoi). I've also heard the term 'webmanga' get tossed around. Anyone have any info on this?

Webtoons used to have a Japanese indie equivalent in the form of the now defunct XOL. Lemme list down all the sites that I’ve found.

Will give royalties:
- Shonen Jump Rookie
- Manga Box Indies
- Manga Hack

Doesn’t give royalties:
- Ashita no Young Jump/Tomorrow’s Young Jump
- And as you mentioned earlier, Comico

The beauty of Comico so far is that one can publish 18+ content just fine for free, but other than that, these are the Japanese sites that focus on mainly webcomics.

Most of the stuff I've found were mostly on Pixiv comic.

I remember there was a Lezhin portal in Japanese. I haven't been there in a few years. I'm not sure if it's still there.

I remember when XOL was closing down, the Japanese readers were NOT happy with that. They wanted read more Tower of God and Noblesse. Now they have to pirate it.

Webcomics took, what, 20 years to get a foothold in Japan after webcomics become mainstream in Korea. Partly, because the Japanese publishers and artists hated the format because of piracy.
