Gaines is sure they've been hired by a fluke, but there they are, working in the SOCLA. Where else could they be? The pay is great there. And they have the training from being a police officer (even if it was only for a day).

Hi everyone! I’m a novel writer, and lately I’ve been working on my story The Shadow of Spirit, a dark fantasy filled with intense battles and fights to the last breath, but also with deeper themes that I hope will make readers reflect.
The protagonist is Kaito, a 16-year-old boy who has lost everything he once had. Left completely alone, he begins a path of revenge. The story takes place in a world where Possessors exist—people who have the power to control spirits… but Kaito is not one of them.
At the moment I’m writing the flashback of Genzō, an old man with a mysterious past who may be hiding far more than it seems.

Usually the story goes something like this; "gates suddenly opened and monsters destroyed our world", but not this time. About three to four hundred years ago, the world almost ended —and it wasn't the monsters appearing from nowhere and ravaging the land like in fantasy novels, but rather at the hands of humans first. The monsters came after.

After various humans began developing strange abilities, the world was plunged into war once again, following years of bloodshed — with no definitive victor — the monsters attacked.
