Just wanna know - order of workflow for comics

When drawing your webtoon, do you 1) finished the lineart for a whole chapter first and do the colouring at the end or 2) you finished the lineart for the first page or went straight to colouring?

I do sketching for a while, then I will color for a while (since my style is semi-lineless). Then when I'm burnt out coloring I'll go back to sketching. It's easier on the mind to stay in one mode for as long as it can and then switch. At least for me.

I use to cover the entire episode step by step. And it use to work fine, but lately I've been feeling burnt out and lacking progress this way since I don't see finished pages until much later. Then I started just doing whatever I was in the mood for breifly, but that resulted in me slacking off / taking more time than planned or the update.
Recently I've been doing the entire draft, then completing a page at a time. Just helps me get my motivation back personally since I can see the results sooner, and provide pages to my patreon this way (since I use to finish to close to a deadline or surpass the deadline, I didn't ever have much to show patrons in regards to the comic)

Both, kind of. I try to do what @snailienz does, switch to one when I get tired of the other.

Not only does it help preserve my attention span, it helps preserve my hands' stamina: I sketch and line IRL and color digitally, so the two tasks use different sets of muscles. My fingertips and wrists get a chance to rest when I switch back to lineart.

I would die, if I had to do a lineart for a whole chapter first I am really getting tired of the process, so sometimes I even start colouring half of the inked page just for a change of routine.

yep i got into a thing of completing frames one at a time start to finish but it slowed me down too much so i had to go back to page by page.

For me it varies project-to-project, depending what workflow that I have set up for that project.

For example, for my main comic that I have on Tapas I've been drawing like 1-3 pages at a time. So like I'll do the pencils for all of them, then the inks, then the colors, and then move onto the next batch and repeat.

But I've also worked on a short 10-page comic a few months ago, and for that one I went through and did all of the sketches first, then all of the inks, then all of the flats, then all of the shading and effects.

I guess the length of the project is the determining factor. I'm just about to pass page 60 for that main comic, and it'll probably end around page 70 at the rate it's going. Doing alllll of the pages at once for this probably would have been too much. But if I were to split it into 3 "chapters" of 20'ish pages each, that sounds like a good amount that I'd like to do all at once up front~

ive found that when i can do an entire stage for a chapter on its own, i do it at the same rate as i would, say, 6 pages.

I work panel to panel, putting down colors blocks first for about 4 or 5 panels (which equals about a page) at a time and then add line art where needed. I will complete about 10 panels to 75% done, and then go back and refine.

I've tried the more "practical" approach of drawing out a bunch of pages first, but I found the process boring. I need to be surprised!

1. storyboarding and write the texte (send texte to my proofreader. now she had a lot of time)
2. sketch all sites (usually per chapter 50-65 panels)
3. make lineart by all pages
4. base coloring by all pages
5. shadowing and sun/light changes by all pages
6. add speechbubbles, do some min or changes

Initially when I was first making the comic I decided to do all the sketch-work first and then the digital portion second. I was making 50 pages before I started posting any of them.

......... I ended up regretting that. It really makes you out of practice when you do only one portion of the overall process over a long period then jump to an entirely different portion...

I prefer doing all lineart first, then base, flats BG, lightings and shades/color.

For me it's best to do one job at a time bc I'm faster this way and I don't want to interrupt my momentum. It can also help me to determine how long did I take to finish certain task per page/panel. Eg. Flats per page

I usually making the scripts first before I started drawing since I'm not fluent in English. It took me sometimes one or two days to finish it. I just do this to follow or what should I draw for every panel while reading the script. Then, drawing/ line art... this process makes me bored most of the time and I want to give up but I know I shouldn't, took me two or four days to finish all of them then I proceed to coloring and after that I put text and speech bubbles then upload it on Tapas XD

I often make very very rough chicken scratch-y thumbnails in a sketchbook or notebook before drawing on the computer, just to play with composition and framing.

Then I make the page layout, figure out how many panels I need etc

Then I make rough gesture sketches of each panel before I get down to the actual nitty-gritty of drawing.

From there on out I ink and color everything, put in speech bubbles, and then add some finishing touches in Photoshop.

I tend to do the linework for 2-3 pages at a time, then color. Then do the linework again, because I work traditionally and tend to paint over the lineart anyways. I say usually because when I am getting to close to a deadline I just do one page in one go.
