Language Buddies?

I like to study languages as a hobby. Is anyone game to be my language buddy? Învăț limba română și franceză. I would like to practice and overall am interested in learning any language and more about people's cultures.

I've always wanted to learn an Asian language and I read that learning to read Korean is rather easy compared to Chinese and Japanese. Notice I said read not speak. I'll learn to speak later. Is there anyone here who's also learning and can recommend some resources? There's a bit but I want to focus on solely reading and writing. I'd love to learn to read japanese and Chinese in a later future as well.

Bună! I am surprised to see such a question here! I'm Romanian, studied English and German at university and learning Korean (then will try Japanese, French, etc.). My comic is called alandala which is a Romanian slang for random lol. What languages do you speak? I'm curious why you would learn Romanian, it's of course not useful in general outside Romania and Moldova. Nu știu ce nivel ai la română ca să spun ceva potrivit.

Right!!! I tried this one language app and the guy I was chatting with was trying to explain small talk to me and I was like "Nope!"

Ideally, I feel like if you befriend someone in real life, they can help with the language. An everyday person isn't an expert on linguistics of course but that was the most effective for me when I was in China.

Trying to learn Vietnamese. Been focusing on other things lately but I think it's time to get back to the grind on it.

Right. If situations were different, I would love to practice in person with a native speaker, but my internet access is my only connection to the outside world right now.

I feel like there's also so much potential reward for learning lesser-known languages. People say "That won't be useful," but the truth is that if you learn it, you will use it, because that door has now been opened to you. And in my experience, people really enjoy it when you make the effort to speak their language when visiting their country, especially if it doesn't happen often. It gives you a way to connect with them that you wouldn't have had otherwise.

Everything was correct, even the diacritics (you'd be surprised how many times we are lazy to use them, if I wanna say fată (girl) or față (face) I'd just write fata lol, but we get it from the context). One thing if I were to nitpick, if you were referring to Romania when you said este foarte frumos, it's actually frumoasă, feminine (most countries are- Rusia, Franța, Coreea de Sud etc.). If you meant it in general, as in it's pretty there, then it's correct.

I totally agree. I've always been taught that no knowledge is ever wasted. Language is something that connects us all.

My first language is Filipino, learned English at school and picked up my local language in my late teens.Despite everyone around me speaking it, I learned that late in speaking my local language because other speakers find my pronunciation strange. The language is similar to Bahasa Indonesia, I believe, and is one if not the only language without the h sound.

Tried to learn Japanese on my own as a young teen because of anime (classmates found it strange, ee were kids back then) and now, Korean because of having exchange students sit in for few classes back in College. At my current level, I can read product labels and decode Korean script but nothing much comes after.

Nice! So far my language skills have only helped me read legal documents from Puerto Rico. Which in my line of work has been helpful

Wow, it's nice when you can use language skills in a professional setting. Also, legal documents, really will be useful.

I remember trying to comment on a book on teaching Spanish (it was for a class about teaching languages, it was an old textbook back when Spanish was taught in high school) when I can only understand a handful of words, too confident that I can take it since I can see words often used and infer meaning and since Filipino has borrowed some Spanish words. However, I almost gave up upon coming across a legal document for a court case. All the words must have been jargon and I had no point of comparison. The book started with using familiar pieces in prose written in Spanish then the second part is just full-blown poetry.

Oh gosh! The book would have been confusing for me. I can read the basics of Spanish but poetry is another level. I never really enjoyed poetry written in English. The documents I had to read were fairly straightforward. I could recognize/understand enough words to understand what it was for
