Looking for advice & comic recommendations

Are you focusing on the american comic or is it worldwide ?
Cause concerning european comics, Jean Claude Forest and Moebius come to my mind.
Maybe Enki Bilal too, the guy is interesting because his work mix comic, cinema and contemporary art concept.

gosh I can't really help with this, but what about webcomics? specifically, how independent creators are given more freedom to create content that's less mainstream, how that freedom may give an outlet to more toxic/uncensored content, etc. (sort of show both sides of the equation).
and of course format! there's traditional and mobile/webtoon styles, and I guess whatever else you can come up with

maybe you already thought of/are doing this (or maybe are limited to mainstream work), but I just thought I'd put it out there

I wish I had some resources/recommendations too, but I don't this time :')

EDIT: joking aside, i should totally include a bit on how the internet has revolutionised comics as a medium, from independent creation to digital features to infinite scrolling. homestuck is a v good example... i jus need to find some others that arent batshit crazy

what about cucumber quest and/or lackadaisy cats? they're pretty decent..
or even sarah's scribbles! that would make a really good example since it's so relatable.

those crowd-written comics might be a good point to look into (I think they're called ms paint adventures?)

i dont think id wanna look at smth like sarahs scribbles bc its like? kinda jus yr common or garden gag a day except its digital. id wanna look at smth that rly took advantage of the digital format (and also, i have to meet the art snobs half way just a little bit, i mean, cmon)

In THAT case, I'd really recommend checking out Harry Bogosian's stuff, especially his comic A Better Place.

And comics on The Hiveworks tend to be really great too!

Jeff Lemire's work is one I'd recommend. His panel work on Sweet Tooth is incredibly clever.
Auto-bio books tend to have very fun panel layouts as well, and are very heartfelt/thought provoking:

good point-- though it might be able to show what the internet does/did for gag-type comics? better not have too much fun with this, now that you mentioned "art snobs" XD

I recommend these artists:

Andrea Pazienza
(the great <3) in italy is like the great master of independent comics, maybe he's the one who truly point out that comics can be ART in italy

Gipi (pretty contemporary)
he's a awesome artist , and he study and experiment a lot with the lettering and the general text

Guido Crepax:
beware is P*rn af, but the style that he used to compose the panels and the pages were very inspiring

(it's not graphic novel)
But he's the autor of Dylan dog aaand he's the one who rose his hand and said "maybe we can create something different from serial comics? maybe something that is not spaghetti western ?"

I don't know, just some hint to make your project more pizza flavoured

Man, I was writing down a paragraph about how you should read Scott McCloud not realizing that you already stated him here. But yeah, his work really is as amazing as everybody says.

I feel when it comes to Manga you could check out the original Ghost in the Shell Manga by Shirow. While I don't think it revolutionized the genre per se, it is still a very influential piece and used the medium in an interesting way.

yo!!! the gits movie is gonna be like a central point in my research! im totally gonna look at the manga if i can, even if it didnt mix it up form wise its a great example of the cultural and politlcal importance of comics and narrative arts in general

I'm not really that knowledgable about comic/graphic novel history (I'm just that indie, LOL) but I think you can't go wrong with looking at Osamu Tezuka "the father of manga". Since the Japanese manga industry has made such an indelible impact.

I hope you'll look at the original anime and not the american version ^^ While it is an okay film I feel it missed the mark when it came to the themes the original presented big time. But I feel this is a discussion for a another day

OP, I'd also like to recommend Winston Rowntree's Subnormality. He really takes advantage of the "infinite canvas" aspect of webcomics. Beautiful work, but not the most commercial.

how about chapter 5 in watchmen, Fearful Symmetry has symetrical page layout ( so page 1 is the mirror of page 28 etc)
