Ahaha, I gave one of my MCs a pet bird (Indian Ring Neck with minor marking omissions for stylization) because I came across this lady's YT page and her star of the show, Bowie.
I had 3 budgies previously, and Bowie was sorta my gateway drug into considering other birds as pets too! IRNs have amazing personalities and hilarious voices. Then there's Caiques! They're very physical birds you can wrestle. Lorikeets seemingly have that trait to some degree, too. Though their voices aren't the nicest to hear. Cockatoos will always bring hilarious drama into your life, carefully consider telling them curse words or you might never hear the end of it.
Although it does require a lot of research. Parakeets are much easier to care for, and some parrots are so smart it's like having a small child around. You have to really think about what kind of personality you want, can you handle lots of noise (Cockatoos and Lorikeets for example, do not make pleasant bird sounds.) Can you accept your bird may never learn to speak? Not all species or individuals are inclined to do so. Can you provide your bird with time per day to roam freely around the house? You need to interact with him and provide him lots of space to stretch his wings. You also must understand you need to actually tame him which requires lots of time and patience.
I was told horror stories like "Oh I would just grab and hold my budgies down until they understood not to bite". Birds explore with their beaks, a nip is not always a bite. This is also domination - the poor bird only stop doing something out of fear. He will never trust you. Personally I am pretty sold on cockatiels. I'm a big whistler myself, so I can't wait to get one or two and teach them some tunes when I have better finances. (Birds are great because they just chill out with you and bob along to music while you draw. One of my budgies was really into hard rock and he was trying to figure out how to sing along to DMC soundtrack. : 'D)
Here's some of my favourite bird videos! : D
Birb love!
