^^This
My parents always did something special for my brother and I growing up. It was always a day about love. Mom would cook heart shaped pancakes and dad would buy us valentines day lollipops to give away to our class at school. My parents continued to send candies to me even through college, regardless of my relationship status. Even now that I'm married, my mom gives me chocolates.
I think in 8 years of marriage my husband and I have had maybe 1 valentines day together? My husband is a firefighter so he always has been on shift. My husband and I go out on dates once a week or every two weeks, so its nothing really special. I didn't get him anything this year. However he left me a cute houseplant in my car this morning. So that's thoughtful.
A few friends from work dropped by and left me little cards and notes and things. (I've been too sick with pregnancy/morning sickness to even think about these things.. so I didn't get anything for others.. its bad I know)
I think this holiday is as stressful or happy as you choose to make it.
