Main characters in masks?

I'm looking for examples of well done comic characters in masks. It's difficult to show full spectrum of expression with hero's face covered!

So this isn't exactly a mask, but Rickety Stitch and the Gelatinous Goo is a great example of showing a wide range of expressions without relying on the face. The main character is a skeleton, which restricts the expression... though there are lots of ways to bend those restrictions. The truly impressive one here is the Gelatinous Goo. He/she/it has NO FACE yet manages to be very very expressive!

From my experience, I think it depends on the style of comic you're doing. If it's very cartoony, you can contort the mask in to expressions. If you're being 'realistic' perhaps not so much.

The eponymous character in The Masked One is a favourite of mine, although the mask does make her enigmatic by hiding exactly what she's thinking/feeling.

Balor, a main character in There was a War, is often, but not always, masked, with only one eye mark and the occasional eyebrow for expression. I think I achieve a reasonable range, but I do sometimes resort to taking away the mask by whatever means.

City of Blank ruins it by just having the masks emote directly, instead of using things like the Noh Mask techniques or just not being a shitty artist.

Uh... Have I done something to wrong you? That was incredibly uncalled for. If you took two minutes to scroll through my comic, you'd see I only use the masks to emote in sillier scenes. God forbid I wanna have a little fun in some pages? I have over a hundred other pages that rely on body language and mood to get what my characters are conveying across.

Based on their other posts around the forums, they're clearly trying to antagonize people so I'm not looking too deep into it now. Still not quite sure what I did to warrant that specific attack though. xP

I highly recommend Daughter of the Lilies.

Only patrons know what the protagonist's face look like.

I'm not sure if this really applies, but the main character of 'Oyasumi Punpun' is literally a cartoon bird.

The eyes are incredibly expressive. If it's a mask covering the lower half of the face, you can pretty much convey all emotions with the eyes and eyebrows alone, but if it's a full covering you can still use different shapes for the eyes to get results.
My character Rin has half her face covered and she still manages to look pissed off with no problems :')

Gone with the Blastwave is an excellent online comic and all the characters have masks on.
