Medibang user problems - desperate help needed

Hi there!

If you're reading this, you know how to use or have used Medibang Paint Pro or its older brother Firealpaca in some way shape or form. If you're ready to be bombarded by questions, ready to help me (a struggling artist) on how to use the flipping program, and have the patience (lots of patience preferred) to teach me what in the SAM HECK OF BANANA I'm doing wrong, then you have reached the correct post.

I need experienced or even not experienced (but know what to do with art programs) users to assist me in figuring out why I'm incapable of using this program, and not laughing at me when I tell them I have only been using digital art itself for about three months. If you can and ARE willing to help me I would be eternally grateful!!!!!!!

Hi! Thanks so much for getting back to me, I really appreciate it! I wish there was a way to show you with screenshots, but I'll do my best to explain it with great detail.

So I'm trying to start my own webcomic. It's only been about three or four months since I started drawing digitally (I've been a traditional artist literally all my life. I just recently (as you can guess) started understanding layers, they're function and how to navigate and use the tools (at a bare minimum) in Medibang.

Step 1: So I added panel material, shaped it the the way I liked, locked the layer (did all the fill it white and add another layer over it thing) and then sketched out what the first page would be.

Step 2: I made lineart for the comic page, deleted the sketch layer and was for sure I was ready to color. I REALLY want to color my comic and not back out as the color is integral for some of the story.

Step 3: I watched tutorials and ended up merging my layers (all of them) so that now I had a final layer that reads Layer 23 ) or however many layers I used or needed. *When I merge the layers (I have no text bubble or text yet) I'm given three option, a
lol never mind figured out how to add pictures
I always pick the first option.
Then I was told to create a fresh new layer (for colouring), to put under the "Layer 23" though when I try to use the brush it does nothing, and when I try to put the layer on top this happens

I can't use clipping for some reason (I think I just don't know how) and I've tried duplicating the lineart layer and working on that (every which way mind you) only to realize mistakes in the lineart ) when I'm just colouring the lines and not the outside. Ex: Trying to recolour the lines of his hair to brown but sometimes black with just stay there.
I figured out how to change the "Blending mode to "Multiply" so I can color inside, but I literally have no knowledge on that either.

Sorry to throw a book at you, but I'm so frustrated and none is really helping

i'll have to come back to it some time later but i'll see if i can find some resources that may help and hopefully some others might be able to give some input as well. i'm not quite used to that method of doing lineart and panel material but i'll try my best

Ok sounds good any help would be really appreciated, but whats the way you usually go about it if not that way?

Well I don't typically use panel material to draw panels though it's honestly a much more convenient method. But in terms of lineart for characters, foreground and background I'll keep those layers separate so that selecting them for coloring is a bit easier. When it comes to adding color for lineart i either make a copy of the lineart layer then add the color onto them with protect alpha selected. As for colors I'll usually have them below the lineart i just have to be certain that everything specifically the background (unless colors have already been set) are set to transparent.

The issue may be what was merged and what wasn't though it'd be hard to tell what's what without any kind of screenshots

Hi I'm really sorry that I haven't gotten around to it but I did some looking about on youtube and managed to find one that's similar to the method I follow here:

I'm still working out a way to record my own tutorial as well as figuring out how to upload, otherwise I'll have to find a way to get some solid screen shots of the process.

Hi, can you help me, how can i extract lines, like not like from traditional art to digital, but like when you line on the wrong layer

I'm not sure what you mean but can you use the lasso tool and just cut and paste the wrong line to the new layer tfrom there?

Well, there’s a line extractor but i dont know how to use it
You see, i saw in this tutorial that, first you click ctrl L which will help you fixate the level which will make the sketch become white and the lineart will stay black in color, but then when you color on a layer beneath the lineart it will still show the white color sketch, and im not sure what to do to get rid of it. I think i need to use the line extractor however it doesnt change even after edit

I'm wondering if you still have the tutorial you followed or saw because attempting to look anything up for medibang specifically is a bit difficult.

I will say, it's just as you said about using ctrl + l to adjust the levels but if you're looking specifically for the extracting lines tool its going to be under filter but it's better used for things like getting lineart from a traditional drawing or converting a photo to use as a background

I tried to test a little bit with a finished drawing and reusing the sketch/lineart layers to experiment and it's possible to bring the sketch to a roughly light grey or white (using levels) without risking losing quality of the lineart which looks something like this:

and then setting that to darken which makes it look like this (note: you can still see some of the sketch when you zoom in but a little bit of erasing where necessary works to make it a little less apparent):

and for comparisons sake how it looks with the original lineart versus with the methods i just explained:

i think the only thing that can really be done if none of the tutorials work is to try and edit as much of the sketch away with blending modes and layer adjustments but also just naming layers in the future so you're not losing track of where the sketch is and where the lineart is otherwise you'll really have no choice but to redraw all of your lineart
