I'm interested in mixed and alternate media in comics. (When I'm slowly working on my own series, I may use any combination of digital painting, vector graphics, and photography). But it's hard to find comics that do this sort of work in their visuals -- so in this thread, let's share links to mixed-media or alternate-media comics and artists!
I'll start us off with a few:
A Softer World is a photo comic by Joey Comeau and Emily Horne. I find that most photo comics tend to suffer when the models feel awkward -- it's like looking at stills of bad actors from a bad movie. A Softer World is different. For one thing, Emily Horne is a great photographer, but also because the text and images interact in a way different from most comics: The loose running conceit is that the text is usually the thoughts of one of the people in the photograph, or the thoughts of the photographer. The pictures are more like candid shots than they are posed models trying to act out a scene. The results are sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and often a mix of both. The series has actually reached the end of its life, but it ran 3 times a week for several years, so there's a pretty big archive.
The Middlest Sister is a cute little comic about childhood memories, made (almost) entirely from arranging shapes of cut paper, with the occasional animation. I like all the textures author/artist Nicole Smeltzer is able to bring into the images this way. In
her art blog, she also sometimes work with water color.
Dave McKean's work usually appears in print, so this is a link to his blog/portfolio. He's probably most famous for his collaborations with writer Neil Gaiman. Dave McKean's work is incredible, and in his different projects he may combine traditional drawing and painting with digital illustration, photography, and even sculpture and found objects.
