But that's part of the thing tho -- the question also said what happens if you don't, so there's that emotional implication to it.

Most of us would choose our loved ones. I know I would. But questions like these are meant to like show who you are "as a person" or whatever and don't take the fear aspect into account.

Many people choose the loved one, almost everyone I would say, but still there is a few people who tryes for a third option, even when it was never offered a third option. This is called to think off limits, breaking the line and going outside the problem. Congratulation, you have given the best answer until now!

It´s funny, I always used to think theese Questions were so useless...because there would always be a way around it.
Until One day I had to decide between my family and my baby sister. And there was no way out, I was 16, i was powerless but at the same time, I had to make the decision. I think that day, a part of me died...

Anyways, I think if I had have to choose between my sister and 100 strangers, I would kill the strangers. Because in that moment, you don´t think about their lives, of their loved ones, or anything. You just think about what you love the most. We are egoistical creatures.

Referencing that comment about snagging them to the middle--I know this is just a thought experiment, but I would be more that can be a pretty brutal way to die. There was a story about some guy who was trying to show off to his friends by lying under the train as it passed over him--hooks on the bottom of his train got caught onto his jaw and well... that was the end of that.

As for the question, I probably wouldn't save my loved one thinking about it atm. In the heat of the moment I might save them because my emotions would be pretty frazzled, but to put myself in their shoes--I wouldn't want to live knowing that my life was saved at the direct expense of many others. To the best of my knowledge, the few loved ones I have would all rather die than live having others die for them, and I would want to spare them from a miserable life.

Now, if I could kill all those people without my loved one knowing about It, I would probably just save my loved one lol

God I hate these questions because nothing like this ever happens, ever and is framed to make you look like the bad guy.... If I had to choose murder my loved one, i'm not an idiot. let thousands die for one person? That's basically genocide and for all I know I might be thrown in jail for the rest of my life for this. Its just a hypothetical question people propose in philosophy classes to get debates but you know in the end its just kind've to make people fight and look people are actually getting salty about it, hoo boy.... There's an even worse one people propose which is something like "who would you kill? a famous neurosurgeon? a severely disabled trans woman or a child?" prank invaders got nothing on philosophy experiments

More than measuring what kind a person you are, i think it measures how you measure lives, if by numbers or by experiences i think. Is a complex choice.

I'm analyzing that this is a situation that doesn't ever happen and that the hypothetical outcome is not only life in jail but probably never endless shame and finger pointing for the deaths you caused over your own negligence. social experiments are just funny when you think about that the end result is never about analyzing the situation but more just making people ashamed in their choices because no one is ever happy lol
