Yeah, Melodic Heavy Metal is actually it's own subgenre...but there's tons of fantastic Prog Metal bands out there.

In short... I love just about every subgenre of metal, I'm a very easy to please Metalhead xD

You ever listen to Whispered? They have a Japanese classical music influence complete with Shamisen and everything. Their lyrics are based off of Japanese mythology. They are freaking insane.

Thank you for the recommendation! I did find interesting aspects (and very happy to hear some flute! It's not the most evidently metal instrument but it often works very well in a metal context). I'm a bit perplex on this specific song though, the Japanese influence feels a bit too much like a gimmick versus a deeper, more meaningful influence, but I'll have to listen to more songs and look at the lyrics too. Overall, interesting new perspectives.

Give their entire albums a listen, the aspect will become clearer, each album is a concept album.
Shogunate Macabre and Metsutan: Songs of the Void are masterpieces. Each song is unique but they all fit together perfectly.

Oh, I definitely love the whole range of emotions and their intensity.
I am mostly a fan of Neue Deutsche Harte, it settled down in my heart when I was 11 with the sound of Rammstein. Except of my German guys, I usually listen to original hard rock, new British wave, power, alternative, goth and pop metal. There are some songs from other subgenres, of course, but all these are like 90% of my rock/metal to listen to.
In any moment of my life, whether I am tired or happy, if someone is making me furious or is already dead, Disturbed is always there for me to ohohohahahaha my way through these times!
Also I've no idea about the metal situation nowadays, I'm quite a boring person with my music, stuck with most of the things I love for more then 15 years now and I rarely try to find something new =)

NWOBHM is still alive and kicking! I suggest White Wizzard's latest album Infernal Overdrive. It picked up where Iron Maiden failed and created some amazingly progressive yet classic New Wave of British Metal tones.
Not to mention....Judas Priest, Saxon, and Tygers of Pan Tang, and even Raven have all released some bangers in the last few years.

I forgot that in my message: I overwhelmingly prefer concept albums or at least albums with a thematic consistency, where each song/part shows its full value only in the context of the whole album. I totally can see how it could improve my experience to listen to this specific song in context.

The problem with new albums is that they are just not the same sometimes. Like, Disturbed came to Russia 2 years ago and I thought I'd die, but go to the concert, but they came with a new album and I didn't like that one at all! And now they come again, you guess, with a new album (again), which I didn't really like too (again!).

I love Written By Wolves, Rev Theory, Adelitas Way, and Blue Stahli in particular , their riffs and lyrics are just what I live for.

Although... forgive me, but I usually can't handle songs with tons of belting in them... I'm not strong enough lmao

Same, but like back then though lol you'd also hear me screaming the lyrics out in the hallways of my middle school and early in high school. I'd get all sorts of looks from people for doing it.. and rightfully so! What in the hell was I thinking??? It's like I was trying to prove something to everyone, like oooh look how metal and brutal I am!

I've always been of the opinion that there are only two kinds of music - good and bad. I've played punk, funk, grunge, prog rock, medieval, Renaissance, classical, folk, and some straight-up metal from my teens up until life steamrolled me. Now I'm thinking I may get back into it, but I'm not sure how likely that will be, nor just how metal this forty five year old mom with chronic health problems can get that involves music rather than pins and screws in her bad hip.

Still, if I have my music on shuffle while in the car with the family, my husband sometimes complains about the New Age or Classical music putting him to sleep. I say nothing and let the music speak for itself when Disturbed or Drowning Pool comes on.

Music is a wonderful thing, and there are so many styles out there. I used to be a "METAL ONLY" guy, but I've since learned to like other styles and enjoy them just as much. That being said... I like metal because there is a deceptive amount of musical skill required to play it. Now...that only goes so far, cause some bands only use basic power chords...but still, there's an energy in the sound, other styles just don't do for me.

At a show...I'm not much of a mosher, but I try to be right up against the stage, banging my head as hard as I can. The pain the next day....worth it? I think so XD

By seeing what you were posting on the 'listening now' thread and here, I was actually wondering what was particularily attractive to you in metal, because I find it so odd that you like virtually every subgenre. Not that there is anything wrong with it, simply it's so different from my own metal experience. I was wondering what was making every of these subgenres/bands attractive to you. I do see that everything within the genre share some similarities (that's why it's a genre!), but I have difficulties to understand how this common material/approach is enough to make you enjoy all or most facets of such a diverse genre.

I do understand a bit better with this last message but still not fully. Especially because you said you used to be 'metal only', so it means you have a very strong connection to /something/ that makes metal what it is, and that is not found anywhere else.

I'm now trying to think of specific pieces that are only partially metal to ask you if you like them. I'd like to deduct how much and what metal elements you need to like a piece. The scientific method haha

Haha, yeah I'm a very rare type of Metalhead, who likes almost everything, I mostly try to be positive in my approach in how I listen to music. There is one subgenre I don't like too much, and that is Black Metal. Yet...there are some bands in Black Metal that I like and tolerate.
The few things I don't appreciate, is extremely hateful lyrics, overly violent lyrics, or sexually explicit lyrics (Which in metal...is a chore sometimes). So that's my only major filter. But other than that, I focus on the musical (Instrumentation,) element first, and if the music resonates, then I usually can get into it.
That being said...A song doesn't have to be technical for me to enjoy it, but it does have to sound "good" and that...is completely subjective, and may even depend on my mood, or if I'm trying to do art, or write story down. It varies.

Feel free to ask me anything on this subject, music is extremely important to me and I like discussing it, even if I disagree, I'll be respectful. Because I know, music is just as important to others as it is to me.
