Multiseries Author Looking for Long Term Artist [Split Profits]

Hello Tapas!

I've recently been dragging my feet in writing, caught in between the stage of making a novel or a manga. Between the two, I feel like the latter is the more suitable way in creating practically all of the stories I have designed. Most of my original works are anime inspired, which heavily influenced my decision in coming here.

I am not the best artist, and find the process of learning and drawing to be difficult. Truthfully, a part of me wished that I have been introduced to it earlier, but it's too late to cry over spilled milk :P. The further I attempted to expand on the stories that I'm making, the more apparent it was that I've been visualizing everything as I wrote it. Again, with drawing not being my strongest suit, I came here to search for a Long Term Artist.

To be honest, I never tried working with other artists before. The closest I gotten was GMing various original roleplays, some of which I'm looking to create concrete stories out of. With that said, I'm sure it would not be too foreign of a task, and with proper communication and execution it is very possible to be successful in. My plan is to keep in touch with my artist via Social Media (my favorites being Messenger and Discord). Eventually, if we can establish mutual trust, I would hope that my artist and I can plan things out through voice chatting or calling.

The stories I have planned are all fairly fleshed out, and open for expansion. With this in mind, lack of content is usually not a problem, and brainstorming can be quickly done if necessary. These stories, if we were to use an analogy, are currently skeletons. They are designed with important plot points, but the story in between is still flexible or nonexistent. I intentionally left them like this so that my artist can also have his/her opinion on specific approaches I make to the story.

My genre of writing is fairly wide. It is dominantly reliant on darker themes and fantasy, but I also explore Sci-Fi, Drama, and Slice-of-Life. Currently, I have 5 and counting stories flesh out, and several more on the drawing board. Any artists interested can converse with me to see if any of my ideas is particularly appealing to them. My hopes is that we will eventually be able to visit most (or all) of these stories at some point or another.

Of course, expressing your interest does not mean you are obligated to stay and work with me. I'm a heavy believer that collaborators need too have good synergy in order to yield the best results. Perhaps, we can start off with short stories, and if you like my style (and I like yours), we can pursue larger projects. If we do, however, I would prefer it if the artist dedicates their heart and soul in creating the story alongside me.

Although I recognize that I, too, am a developing writer, I would like to see some of the artist's works to see if I would be happy to work with said artist. This can also be done, again, with story stories. Since my stories revolve around certain themes and moods, some styles of art are unfit of portraying the story properly (Ex: Lolis probably do not scream death and blood), so bear it in mind that there's a wide variety of factors why I might not work with you. In terms of color and format, I'm less picky about. Art is art, am I right?

First off, this is one of the better collaboration threads I've seen around here!

Secondly, ∆ that's my general style, but I tend to stray more cartoonish or more realistic depending how much work a scene requires, and,

Third, I would love to convert a short story or even just a scene to comic form, for you. Those genres are right up my alley, and while I DID write with a credited partner to get the stories filled out, we hardly managed to conclude anything so the last few planned chapters are up to me and I am honestly lost D:

so, yes, yeah, if you have a short story you're willing to script out, I can see what to do about sketching some raw panels and pages in tapas longform. an inker and colorist you'll have to find separate.

Been thinking all morning for a story that makes good use of your style @_@. Still working on it.

I'm not sure how it might go but I'm certainly up for designing a short story with you. The art style is drastically different from the ones I was expecting, so it's likely that it is not suitable for the current concepts I have planned. Besides, all the projects I mentioned so far are huge, and I want to make the time commitment required to create them clear to all of those out there.

Your art style makes me think of a more somber style of story. Though cartoony, it is realistic enough to have it passed off as realistic. Of course, this is just how I view it. The stories I'm brainstorming are falling within the medieval & prohibition types of periods. I dunno why, those are the two genres I'm gravitating towards.

I might have a story that would appeal to you.

You Sip, My Blood

Pardon it's lesser quality—it was written in a couple days for a school project, so I had to rush it. However, the concept is there. We could even heavily modify it, including time periods, characters, etc. I'll quickly summarize it.

You Sip~ My Blood
A senior college student (Rivel Hughes) became involved in the bootlegging industry in order to support his education. Initially, he joined for the thrills, so he was quite disappointed to find out that the work was dull and uninteresting. However, he needed the money, so he remained in the business.

One day, his boss introduces him to his colleague; a young man (Quinton) who just entered college, which the same impression as he had over the job several years earlier. At first, Rivel found Quinton to be extremely bothersome, constantly pestering him during what is supposed to be his free time. However, after their first run, Rivel felt kind of guilty to see Quinton's expression, which reminded him of him back in the day.

So Rivel and Quinton become good friends, Rivel being a sort of mentor and big brother to the younger and more naive Quinton. However, one day they encounter a policeman, who Quinton puts down (to save Rivel from arrest), and they become fugitives.

And things happen from there. Ultimately, Rivel takes the blame and is executed, but he has no regrets with the short happiness he was given.

So if that tickles your fancy, I can start developing it into a script. Otherwise, I would be interested in whether you have any ideas or genres (IE: Vampires, judging from the design you provided) that you want me to go in depths on. I'm open to pretty much anything, as long as it doesn't venture into the overly saucy genres of writing. As long as it's interesting, I'm willing to put it into my portfolio :3

WHAAAT, YES, i have been watching SO MUCH boardwalk empire it's not even a joke. i could actually do a short (maybe 20 eps, 7-10 panels) from that description, perfectly - it tells a story, has a conflict, and a tragic resolution. ; h;

i would just need character descriptions for rivel and quinton, and can knock out a few examples of more cartoony styles like

I work in school and at home a lot, but also have a number of projects to work on. I'll try to get it out as soon as possible. As for the length, I'm extremely bad at pacing, so it might fall short or extend greater than your estimate. I'll aim to be as accurate as possible, but it would usually extend longer due to my attempts to make the story flow at a more consistent pace. Hopefully you wouldn't mind if we reach that circumstance.

Anyhow I'm definitely looking forward to it. If we make any profits, I will find a way to split it :3

ooooh noooo see i wasn't looking for a paygig or anything longterm - and believe me when i say i know what it's like to have more ambitions than free time.

so i recommend starting small, just to practice getting a project down and out. simplify your goals, simplify your story, and at the end of it you'll make a greater impact having at least finished something. this is just a practice gig for me, again you'll have to find an inker, colorist, and letterer separate. :B

but if you're re-posting the finished (or even just the sketched) version on tapas or elsewhere, a simple titlepage credit and description linkback will suffice. it's as simple as right-click saving the sketched pages after i post the episodes. (i know smackjeeves can list both people who work on a collab, can tapas?) the image files i'll be posting here will not be quality enough for print, though i guess nobody is stopping you and a xerox, haha.

but.

and this is very important.

it is usually extremely bad form to ask an artist to provide free labor, or for practice or exposure. generally when you collaborate, you ought to have kickstarter or producer funds to pay up front for time and labor. this is same for yourself, as a writer - you have other life obligations, so why treat this project as seriously as if you were getting paid for it? i certainly can't pay to use your story, so keep your worth in mind if and when you ever look to write for comics seriously.

you will have so many ideas, i've no doubt, and go ahead and jot those ideas down for later, but for the script you can follow the tried and true conflict-resolution story arc. a simple script, a finished product, and linkbacks to your tapas account to advertise your other work / novel/s. community building!

Since you're on, are you free to use a text chat software? IE: Discord, Skype, Facebook? It'd be great if we can connect with each other to address some stuff.
