The main reason I've always had more than one cat is that they keep each other busy, when I don't have the energy to play with them. It can take a lot of time and energy to keep a kitten entertained, so they don't destroy anything but you'll get used to it. Cats are very curious creatures their whole lives, so it's also good to keep their environment exciting by creating places they can explore and sometimes destroy. Cardboard boxes are great, since you can throw them away if they scratch them and they're easy to place in unexpected places. I always have at least one cardboard box in the apartment and I just occassionally change its place. Getting a new box is always a good day for cats. Sometimes I also put a blanket over a chair to create a small fort, the cats love that! Cats also enjoy watching out the window, so having a napping spot by the window is a good idea since the view outside is rarely completely still.
My cats are 11 years old and they're still as playful as ever, but it's not destructive the way it was when they were young. I just make sure the apartment is a fun and safe playground for them and they pretty much keep themselves entertained. Sometimes I just throw a ball for them or chase them playfully (their favourite game) but it's pretty easy peasy. Time and patience, that's really what taking care of a cat is all about.
