Names or phrases you don't like?

I don't have any specific issues with Pandora, but it does bore me a bit when people reference Greek mythology at all in their naming schemes. Like, when your super-dark antagonist group is called H.A.D.E.S. or whatever, I am not holding my breath to be impressed.

The whole pantheon is referenced so often in media, it's really not creative anymore. It's more like a crutch, to let the audience know what a person or thing is going to be like (Hades=dark/deadly, Pandora=mysterious/forbidden) without having to put in the world-building leg-work yourself.

...Anyway, there are probably loads of names/phrases I have stronger negative feelings about; I just can't remember any right now (as usual...). Hopefully this topic will jog my memory in due time~ ^^;

The worst with the Greek mythology names (or other like that) is when it's used by people who have no idea what it actually means because they chose it from some pop culture reference that chose it from some pop culture reference that chose it.. you know what I mean.
We can't know everything, and we may be especially lost with this kind of references if it's not from our culture, and that is fine as a reader, but if we are going to use it ourselves in a work of fiction, I think it's our duty to do a minimum of research to know where it comes from.

Whenever someone uses "supposably" instead of "supposedly", it just really bothers me to no end, for some reason! It's like the most inexcusable word usage for me, and I don't know why??? This is the one word that gets me acting like the grammar police, like for real

"Cringe" is another one for me. I absolutely hate it lol I've seen people use it as an excuse to either bully someone or just be overly self-deprecating.. like there's no positive way to use it, in my opinion, and that's kinda the reason I don't like it

Little hypocritical here, but the misuse of the word "triggered" nowadays upsets me. People use it as an alternative to "upset" or "mad", when it's supposed to be a way for someone to let someone else know, "hey I'm having a panic attack/ some sort of mental breakdown, help me out here" but like.. I use it that way too. So, I'm definitely part of the problem lol I try my best to refrain from misusing the word like that so often so.. yay me

"Like" and "lol" .. bc I overuse these as a filler words in my daily vocabulary.. I'm pretty sure I used 'em in this comment a few times already. Half the time, I feel like using a regular period at the very end of a comment or a text is way too formal and/or it gives off the vibe of me being mad, so "lol" is that replacement for me. And "like"? That's just.. idk, I just need it to fill out my sentences, I'm super comfortable with it

What is the noun to describe someone with autism in English then? Is there none? Do you have to say 'an autistic person'? 'Autiste' is the actual word in my language (French, and I think in all the Romance languages although I'm not 100% sure). I had no idea it had a specific (negative) meaning in English. I may have used it a lot (I'm autistic too).

well in the english language its not a word (to my knowledge), it first popped up on minecraft videos in the early 2010s as an insult towards other players. yes, there isnt really a noun, besides "an autistic person" or "person with autism", "mentally handicapped" is more a universal term but it counts

So I just checked, it is a word in English; in use in medical literature since the 1920'. However, that does not mean its meaning did not change over time, so it may still be a word to better not use.
Can I ask you where you are from? Sometimes meanings change depending on geographical location.

I really don't want to try to prove you wrong or anything like that (I hope it does not sound like that).
It's only important to me well, first because I'm autistic and want to know what word I can use or not in my environment, and second, I love languages and meaning differences between places, and how they occur etc.

I don't have so much words I hate, probably except couple. It's russian and I can't accurately translate it to english, so you probably won't get it.

"Парниша" - I hate this word, it's translating like "guy" but somewhat different. I'm really hate this word, very, very much. When I learned in the university every hipster used this word to adress others, including me. I hate this word so much, it's pissing me off completely

And also using many anglicisms in russian language, when even ordinary word changed to english, I hate this too, really hate it very much. Always when I see it, even if I understand it (for most part I am, of course) I pretending that I do not understand, demanding correct translation for this words. I'm some kind of purist for russian language.

And the word "интеллигент" when somebody adress me with this word. I'm not going to hate my nation, culture, and try to sell my country to foreigners, like "intellegentsiya" doing since 19th century. For me this is offensive word and using it when adressing to me is making me angry for sure

im canadian, i looked up the word many times for clarification and it either corrected it during search. this is what made me believe it wasnt a word, personally i don't want to have a conversation about this since the word pisses me off that much

I dislike the word “hypebeast” for some reason. I wasn’t aware of this term until the my sister pointed it out to me a few weeks ago. It’s what a lot of Generation Z kids are into these days, i guess? Defined as, “A person who follows a trend to be cool or in style. A person who wears what is hyped up.”

Guess i’m just old and find it a little unimpressive when it’s used too much. There was a video of some kids who are a “hypebeast” group and they go around malls in their trendy hip clothes, and just hang, and pose in a cool way and film themselves as if they’re in a TikTok-esque music video. It was...interesting.

Also when people say “should of” instead of “should have.” 🤦🏻‍♀️

TBH it bothers me a tiny bit when normal words are misspelled intentionally for "casual-ness" too often.

E.g.
boy -> boi
bird -> birb
yes -> YAAAASSSS

It doesn't bother me at all if it happens occasionally. But if people always spell them like that then I start to worry that the perfectly good normal versions are becoming endangered.

I hate the words banci and bencong. It basically how we call trans women, but it is actually a derogatory terms.

A more better way to call them is waria (which basically an acronym of wanita pria, that translate to female male), but in conversations, 8 out of 10 those two words will be use by peoples instead of waria.

You also said it to insult peoples, so another big no for me.

Either it is because they're too used for using those words or something else, I just hate it.

To make myself clear, I also ended up slipping up and said it too sometimes, so I hate it even more.

PS. Banci also mean census, but it is more widely use in Malaysia.

Yep fugol is the most common one as far as I know. But bridd, brib, bird is all the same, as the spelling got harmonized and standardized way later, even after the Middle English period, at the Early Modern English period. Before every author had their spelling depending on local accents and influences from different dialects and even different languages and sometimes even in the same text you get different spellings, either from the same author or because the manuscript we have is actually a mix between lost manuscripts of several authors.
