New Year 2019 - Artistic resolutions

Comics take A LOT of time.
You can go slowly, very slowly.
Just don’t give up.

Priorities

1) Finish “Wanderlust” novel edition, draft
2) Launch “Wanderlust” comic edition (aka finish first two stories, with the two extras and intermissions)
3) Finish “Super Confuse” first arc, ‘Origin Story’

Lesser Priorities

4) Find an art style that I may be comfortable with for tukotn relaunch (not gonna happen this upcoming year and that’s okay, I shouldn’t rush this story)
5) Finish “Wanderlust” (comic edition) first four stories (half of the whole collection)
6) Finish “Wanderlust” (novel) second draft

Would be nice:

7) line art, just do it, try it
8) get back into watercolor painting, even if it’s just one piece, finish something

I was originally going to launch wanderlust (comic) as soon as I finish drawing the first two stories, but I thought it’d do me more good to just finish the novel version and then make the comic version. The stories I wanted to tell would be more efficiently told that way. Goodbye the few panels I already drew. I might reuse some of ya’ll if I can.

• complete my current short story, hopefully around spring.
• I've decided I want to keep experimenting before moving to a larger story, so i'd like to write and complete maybe 1-3 additional short(er) stories in the same universe
• I've started writing the larger series but it's been a slow go. I'd like to give that project the time it deserves this upcoming year and start stitching together the plot and beginning some concept art/character designs.
• I'm hoping to really take time to study and practice some of my weaknesses between projects. Things like gestures, better anatomy understanding, foreshortening, DRAWING PEOPLE IN PROFILE, etc.
• Drawing speed up is always a goal, of course, but I'd like to reach up towards 2-3 pages per week instead of 1-2
• along with the above point, the vid that @Rosso linked is like.... goals xD I'm also extremely jelly, but that's an awesome skill to keep developing @u@ a lot of my speed up this year came from omitting certain things from the penciling phase but I'm no where near that level lmao

Nothing wrong with aiming low, since aiming high can be stressful. It's good to set goals that are doable, so they don't become too much to handle.

One of my goals was to start a forum thread. I just started one, so I guess that it won't be part of my goals for the new year. Besides that, my goal is to continue to improve my art work.

It's June, so I thought it might be nice to lift this thread up and see how everyone is doing with their resolutions! Are you doing what you planned or did you forget your resolutions? If you did, no worries! There is still time to get back on track!

For me, I have succeeded in two parts: learning how to paint in acrylics and updating my comic weekly! With acrylics it's still slow learning but I got some great tips from teachers and now I'm looking for some paint supplies, so I can practise at home during summer.

Unfortunately, I forgot that I was also supposed to practise drawing motion better. Oops.

With the help of Instagram, def been getting more eyes on my comic and my art in general...though it still hasnt increased rev exponentially, I have gotten a little more than last year. Only area I need to work on is sales at conventions...they've been about the same and I've been thinking about dabbling in the realm of fan art prints; I'm not super big on it, but it may make the difference versus breaking even/coming up short.

As far as actual production/consistency- still having issues with that. still getting arm/back/shoulder/wrist issues that force me to back off until they get better; also I notice that I have periods where the enviroment where I work at sometimes becomes a issue/distraction.

The "other projects"- doing okay so far with those...about to get back into production on the webcomic(took a couple months off to get another comic project done in time for a con), but gonna try to make some time to get in more stand alone pieces. I feel this will be better once I get better at drawing on my iPad(I bought last yr during the holidays for this purpose).

finally get back to work on my main comics and build at least a 2-5 page buffer for myself

it's off an on but it's something. didn't manage to make buffer like i'd hoped but I'm at least scripting ahead

take time to flesh out some of the other story ideas I've been sitting on

i had dedicated time to fleshing out a good amount of my stories but then the drive they were on got damaged so it's all still in mind (sort of) i just have to retype essentially everything QvQ)

push myself more in working on the things i want to improve with in art like environments, backgrounds, dynamic posing and other stuff

I've finally been doing backgrounds a bit more though it's still not easy but I'm having fun trying new things. As for poses I'm using a lot of sonic related things as my inspiration and reviving that part of my art past. my character poses were way more out there when I made sonic art so I figured using something I'm familiar with would help things along.

I'm kind of doing this? My art style has been making small changes over time and I'm experimenting more with palettes. We also bought some painting stuff recently for other work but I plan on using it as a chance to experiment

participate in more art challenges

I...havent done this one. attempted to do misadventure may but could get past days one and two. wanna try kaijune but i think i'll use it for warmups rather than a completed drawing a day

@jurinova Kind of failed but also not really.

These were mine:

Release three new projects.
Write ten books (or more).
Finish my current ongoing series' on Tapas.

I did release three new projects and I finished 2-3 of my current ongoing series' on Tapas, but so far I've only finished 4 manuscripts and I don't think I'll be reaching ten by the end of this year. Reason being though that I started writing a book that's going to be really long in terms of word count, and so I might not have time to finish other, shorter projects. So... I guess it's a partial success?

@Shanny8 It's not easy to get art noticed, so even small increase is good! Conventions are hard work, and it is worth considering to have at least one or two fan art prints. It may enough just to have them on show to draw people's attention to the table. Good luck with the rest of the year! I hope your hand/shoulder situation gets better!

@VibrantFox Well done on scripting ahead and pushing yourself to improve! What a shame about the drive, though! I hope you can still remember everything and write it all down before it fades away. Luckily there's new art challenges every month, so there's still plenty of time to participate!

@A_Username That's a really good success, I'd say! That's honestly really amazing that you managed to do so much and it's only June!
