New Year 2019 - Artistic resolutions

2019 is approaching fast, so now's the perfect time to think about goals and resolutions for the new year. What do you want to achieve with your novel or comic next year? Do you want to to perhaps learn or practise your skills more? Tell us all about it! If you don't have any goals yet, then maybe this thread will spark some new ideas in you.

Personally I've noticed that too strict resolutions don't work for me, so I like to set myself goals that are possible to do but still challenge me a bit. This year I want to:

• Learn how to paint with acrylics
• Improve how to draw motion better
• Keep updating my comic consistently

Let's make the next year artistically and creatively a good one!

Try to stay consistent on my comic and finish it in a timely manner
Try to get more eyes looking at my comic enough to really generate revenue
Try to get more "other projects" done as well- whether it be a print, a side project exclusively for my Patreon, or just doodling out something other than my comic. I tried doing this this year(during my break between chapters) and enjoyed it.

i wanna achieve a FRACTION of such a skill and confidence too!! (>__<

this skill will save me SO MUCH TIME and effort on the long run. i don't wanna keep spending forever on every single update. And tbh a "messy, thicker ink" style fits the type of story i'm making more than what i have atm. I suppose i also wanna settle on a fitting style for my webcomic too?

Ha that's a great thread! I usually keep my goals for myself but here I go:
- Complete the 1st chapter of Witchballs before April
- Get it printed to advertise it in conventions
- Revisit and complete the 1st chapter of ETA:24
- Finish scripting this one-shot I've been having in mind
- Post regularly (updates+social media)
- Learn how to use perspective better
- Complete the orders I've kept aside

That's a really good one for practise! When you finish the sketchbook it will be a great way to also see your improvement by comparing the first pages to the last ones.

My resolution is gonna be all about making buffer for my comics:
- I want to finish at least 1-3 chapters of buffer for each comic I'm working on.
- I want to finish my starter comic by the end of January (It's short, so it's feasible XD)

This is the first time I have any artistic resolutions at all haha. I guess 2019 would be:
1. To keep motivated. (This is the most important i think since i've been trying to grasp my artistic possibilities, experiments, and journey.)
2. I want to have better consistency and speed at the same time, so I can always have buffer and can enjoy what I'm doing.
3. Publish my comic and have a regular schedule I guess. But this is a scary thing, might as well just be the last thing to expect.

Well, I usually don't do new year's resolutions, but...

• quadruple my overall drawing speed within 6 months
• become proficient at drawing certain things that I'm currently not good at: "advanced" human anatomy; animals; robots and mechanical things
• experiment with traditional media
• make a decent amount of money from art in 2019

My list might be a bit too ambitious, but... I think it's doable, depending on what my non-art workload ends up looking like.

• Maintain a 2pg/week upload schedule for Underworld Engine.
• Complete at least one short standalone comic.
• Do more pitches!
• Bolster the heck out of my portfolio.
• Work at least part time in art (paid, lol).
• Improve my understanding and drawing of form, mechanical constructions, complex perspectives and foreshortening, and dynamic action poses.
• Experiment with more interesting paneling and lettering.
• Dive back into animation, 3D modeling, and pixel art with a couple short projects.

Only one point here:

• Continue to draw my main series and don't give up on it, despite all work and study duties awaiting in 2019, and despite all my possible mood and tastes changes in the future. That would be the success by itself.

It would be really a great deal to not get tired of drawing it, and to continue finding enough time for it during the whole next year.

• Finish current project!
• Learn to decide a characters color scheme before the page they appear in.
• Learn black shading more!
• Learn to detail better then just adding random detail lines.

1. Finish a paper version of "Milhamah: Fighting Words" Issue #1 and wrap up production on Issue #2 by the year's end.
2. Sell my work at three cons minimum.
3. Finish designs for 10 more main characters.
4. Publish webcomic-related art at least weekly, even if it's just a few panels at a time.
5. Get involved in podcasting (already in the works) and possibly YouTube.
6. Launch my Patreon in January and get at least $100 per month by the year's end.
7. Try a weeklong Instagram ad campaign per month for three to six months.
8. Reach at least 1,000 Instagram followers.
9. Develop in-person relationships with seven to 10 local book and comic stores.
10. Expand my merch and T-shirt line 500%-1,000%, including mainstream-friendly designs.
11. Market, market, market once my first issue is published. Press releases, review requests, etc.
