Oct 2024

Who's doing them this year? I kinda forgot until right now, but I've decided to do OC-tober again with my newer characters from both Dreamseer and Antemortem. Dunno if I'll do all the prompts because I have so much to do but I'm trying! Feel free to share your prompts here!

And here's the one I'm doing:

I love how forgiving this challenge is, lol.

I'm doing cringetober! but I have other prompt list around (goretober scarbaretober. phobiatober. drawtober) Those are more for sketchbook prompts, I am SO HYPED for October (it is also exam season for me but whatever).

I'll be posting my cringetobers to tumblr and insta, I'm dedicating it to my paranormal horror project Keep The Moon To Your Left I've got something a bit overly ambitious planned for the animation meme prompt but I've been prepping for weeks.

I love october prompt lists, I love october in general - A) its spooky month and god do I love horror and all things spooky B) it's my birthmonth, C) everyone is doing these prompt lists so there so much art to go around! its great.

You're trying so many! Those sound cool though, especially cringetober, lol. No exams for me but I have a couple books I'm working on apart from general life stuff.

This is just a really good way to improve as far as art goes. I did it last year and I think I got a little better, so might as well do it again. And also I just love the spooky season! Which is probably why so many of my stories have death and other morbid things as themes. That's nice that you get to have a spook-tastic birthday though!

That looks really good! Love your use of color and how the blood really pops (which is something I can only say during the spooky season without getting the FBI's attention, lol).

I'm gonna be doing a lot of sketchy stuff because I don't have it in me to do colors stuff with neat linework everyday. Gonna try to do more backgrounds this year to get some practice in, though!

Anyway, Day 1 of Oc-tober is fav character! I picked Ira from an unpublished WIP because he's an annoying little shit who dresses like an old man and that's fun.

Thanks!! I really wanted the blood to be the focal point of the piece. Ira looks great I love the cozy cardigan and background shelf with the roman bust it's giving :sparkles:️pretentious history major:sparkles:️ funnily enough, my favourite character (whose gonna pop up fairly often for cringetober) is also called Ira! (Though his name is pronounced ee-ra rather than eye-ra)

Not super into the tsundere trope, Kani (the subject of this piece) isn't hostile towards her girlfriends. She's just easily worked up about academia, she studies occult practices and hates it when people disrespect her field. She is pictured here ranting to her GF, Emerald.

Yeah, it's not a trope for everyone, lol. I love your twist on it being her getting riled up about something she cares about, and also love the art! Love her design, btw, definitely screams academic while the bright colors make the character stand out.

Okay, so Day 2 is New OC! I have a couple because I just started a new story, but I'm going with Cassian! He's a necromancer and kind of a jerk, but he's nice deep, deep down. He also looks half dead because of plot relevant reasons.

He's so spoooky I love it . (If he's a jerk who'se rude to people he cares about deep down, does that make him a tsundere? things to ponder I suppose)

Day 3!

Emerald! She's a girly girl, with a big sword, and reclusive tendiencies. more of her to come!

He's just a jerk who decided the life of a hermit was perfect for him until some thief broke into his house, lol.

Love Emerald's look! Definitely getting girly-girl who's not afraid to bash some skulls in with a sword, sorta vibes, lol.

Day 3: Old OC

Gotta go with Eli who is definitely a tsundere, lol. But I think I'd be moody too if I were an exhausted and broke college student who'd caught the eye of the local vigilante. And also he works in a coffee shop, so that sucks.

Customer service will turn anyone into a tsundere.... I really like howyou ground your characters in interesting scenes that tell you about them, Ira's got a bookshelf with a bust on it, Cassians stuck in the woods, eli's in a cafe. It tells you a little about the character and the world they interact with. It's something I'd like to integrate into my work

Tbh war flashbacks to my department store days. Usually I don't bother with backgrounds because I'm not really good at them, but that's why I'm trying to use more this year. Even if it's simple stuff it's good practice!

Emerald's a notdeer and Ira's a cowardly mountain lion. It's kinda funny that I drew Ira as a furry before I drew him normal for this challenge. for reference he looks like this (mind the tiddies)

He's a demigod of death, and Em's soul is stuck halfway between life and death, so I thought it'd be neat if he was a carnivore and she was a herbivore that got messed up.

That's a pretty cool concept, but I'm biased because I always write about death for some reason, lol. I love the vibrant colors you use!

Day 4: Under-appreciated OC!
Going with Elias, but only because his story is new so he hasn't had a chance to get fans. As you can see, he's sulking about it while Cassian is probably laughing at him off-page, lol

homie will get his time in the sun he seems rad as hell

Some human versions of anthro characters I made for an unpublished comic, Dile, Wolf and Cat. They're a bunch of scavengers in a alien post apocalypse where all humans were killed and alien technology has given animals sentience. and nothing terrible happens to them I promise.

Nothing terrible? :eyes: I sense future trust issues, lol. Dunno why, but it's always fun to see human versions of anthro characters, maybe because the reverse is more common. The little spots of color tying them all together was a nice touch!

Day 5: Re-designed OC

Didn't have a lot of time for this one because I didn't know who to draw, lol. I don't really redesign characters. It's very likely what you see is what they originally looked like. Anyway, here's Oliver from an unpublished WIP. I didn't so much re-design him as I did the whole story. He's horrified at how cartoony he was before.

I think that his current and old desings are cute, I like his silly witch hat. But his hair style is nicer in the newer version. I personally love redesigning characters. I think its cool to see characters grow and change as I get older. but also of a big proponent of "if it aint broke don't fix it" and these are pretty fun designs!

Ik that cyan isn't the most unnatural eye colour but I wanna draw my bird boi!

And for today was trek, so I drew Perry the platypus and Doofenshmirtz trekking through the desert, from that one episode

It may not be natural but it looks cool, lol! I live the outline done in blue and the red bg really makes it all pop.

@drewdoniger I love your latest one, lol! Very nice use of color for the lighting and obviously A+ choice in characters.

OC-tober Day 6: past

Here's 16 year old Aster back when he was a mage in training and still didn't look like he and sleep were mortal enemies. Also, behold my half-assed background!

Half assed background is better than a photobashed one... speaking of which

This is between my story and stardew valley. Which, weirdly, is the origin of the story. I wanted to try my hand at fanfic/art, so I started to draw my head canons for the villagers, one of which was that Sebastian and Alex could make for a very interesting couple because both of them struggle with deadbeat dads, I thought that Sebastian and Hailey would have fun bitchy interactions. Since then, I've morphed the characters severely into whatever I wanted. Sebastian became Fabian. Hailey became Emerald (which is a sharp contrast in personality) and Alex became Ira (perhaps even sharper). Fabian and Emerald are twins, Fabian and Ira do NOT date (Ira is aroace) Ira and Emerald are besties, just like Alex and Hailey ig.

I made my own October art challenge involving my own characters from my comic

Day six: vampire

I can see the influence but I like the changes you made, especially with Emerald, lol.

@Beelovabea Oh, nice, I love the glow you added around the eyes!

Quick sketchy sketch before I go make preserves, but here's Day 7: Likes! Went with Aster, who loves sweets even though he doesn't eat as much as he should (he forgets). He also likes his pretend husband, but it was easier to draw a cake. :sweat_02:

the dead meme in question:

These are Ira's parents. From left to right we have Alacrán, this world's god of death and the afterlife, she is thousands of years old but has only recently woken from a 500-year-slumber, she can only be perceived by the living when they are close to death and at the darkest hours of night.

Next is Emilio Velazquez, Ira's dad, who has had his soul permanently stuck between life and death for most of his life, he had Ira when he was 23ish and he and Alacrán grew distant as he got older and she got used to the modern world and they settled into a co-parenting dynamic.

Finally, we got Talia, a biologist, who very stubbornly doesn't believe in ghosts, souls, or the afterlife and who is also Emilio's wife with two kids. Whenever confronted by the paranormal, she either rationalises or studies it, if a study results in something that seems paranormal, it requires more study. Ira having angel wings and sometimes turning into birds or a skeleton have required long-term study. Along the way she developed a pretty good relationship with both Ira and Alacrán, who both enjoy her perspective even if she makes theories about them being mass hallucinations.

I'm not 100% sure on what their dynamic is specifically how Emilio and Alacrán feel after 25 years of co-parenting, but them being an on-and-off thruple isn't out of the question.

Tag yourself, I'm the nightgown/nightcap wearer, lol. I love it when there's just that one character that's super skeptical even while surrounded while batshit stuff. Like, girl, the man has wings.

Day 8: Dislikes!

Here's Cassian after being asked that question and almost immediately thinking of a certain thief.

Oooh this one is gross and crusty, as is the nature of 30-day challenges. anyway this is a still from on of my favourite childhood videogame garfield's scary scavenger hunt. where you go rounda haunted house solving puzzles to get photorealistic garfield branded baked goods.

I feel like I've seen that game before. But I could just be misremembering because of all the Garfield I read and watched as a kid, lol.
