Okay guys, Trump won, so are people really planning to move to Canada?

The results brought in a Republican President-elect, with a Congress that is now controlled by a Republican House and a Republican Senate-- the idea that all three branches are the same and have similar views, scares a lot of people. The fact that we had this under W. Bush and it swing again like this, so quickly, is alarming. What does that say about the climate of the people in this country?

What about his nominations for the Supreme Justices (4 seats are possible to open under his term)? Will those nominations be progressive? Student debt crisis, knowing his past in the for profit sector-- those students will not get any debt relief any time soon. He has mentioned getting rid of Obamacare... a lot of Republicans feel that way too. Efforts to address Climate change? Pfffft. Hoax. It's a hoax remember?

(^^He's in charge of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works BTW... wants to ban same sex marriage... y'know. Small stuff).

It's what he (Trump) represents and damage being elected could bring internally and internationally.

But, if this thread really is focusing on if people are willing to leave the country... I'll just leave it at that then. Just saying that if people are considering it because of fear of the current climate and what it may become, maybe we should listen and not be so quick to dismiss their fears.

An egomaniac president is bad enough, but the president does not control the nation all that much. It's THE REST of the government we are scared of. Republicans now control congress, majority of governor positions, and they get to replace a supreme court justice. They are about to get shit DONE in a way we have not really had an opportunity to see. The problem is, their policies tend to adversely affect those who don't support them more than they benefit those who do.

A gay couple getting married in no way affects a straight couple, but they are adamant about banning gay couples because THE BIBLE. It benefits absolutely nobody. Involving religion in a classroom setting does not benefit a person of that specific religion more than it alienates those who are not a part of that religion. I was bullied in middle school for not identifying myself as either Christian or Jewish like the rest of my classmates IN A DISCUSSION ABOUT HOW GREAT AMERICA WAS BECAUSE OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND DIVERSITY. Now imagine if religion was preached in schools. All it does is validate one religion while simultaneously putting down all others, not to mention atheists.

I grew up in a conservative family. I watched Fox News for years. I used to agree with them on certain things. I see where they're coming from. But the fact of the matter is that the biggest issues they tend to care about are issues that DO NOT actually affect them.

And the worst part of all of this, going back to the topic, is that the people who so badly want to escape this reality are likely not going to be eligible to move to Canada no matter how badly they want to. They are likely too poor or not educated in the fields the Canadian immigration system favors. Some people will leave because they can, but the rest of us are stuck here while our homeland changes drastically. And it's going to change. A single party controls everything right now, which many people here on Tapastic have never witnessed in their lifetime.

Personally, I have wanted to move out of the country for years but simply can't afford to. All the election did was make me more desperate to leave. I'm sure a lot of people are in the same boat.

I don't know much about politics, but I do know that Trump is racist, misogynist, an idiot, and a fool. He's everything a president should not be.
I'm not in danger. I'm on the other side of the world.
I can't imagine how people in America are actually feeling right now.

I've read that the republicans don't have an overwhelming control over senate, there are still a number of democratic senators (iirc?) - not to mention, a lot of the republican party doesn't like trump - so it's very likely that it's just going to be another congress deadlock that's been going on for the past few years. He can't undo any SC decision such as Obergefell v. Hodges (same-sex marriage being constitutional, and even if they wanted to undo the decision - a different case has to be brought up that has to prove the first case was a bad decision), but now the issue is that any progress moving forward for pro-lgbt rights is going to potentially be hampered, particularly since Pence himself stated that they're going to be anti-lgbt.

people have been saying they'll leave the country all the time, maybe there are a few who will go ahead with that promise but it's a frequent "joke" around election years.

"Moving to Canada" jokes aren't funny when the oppressed minorities will have just as much of a problem there and/or can't afford it in the first place. They'll be left to clean up everyone's messes (as usual).

It's an entitled and privileged joke I'm sick of it.

If you're in a position of sociological and political power, you STAY and you make sure the actual people who will suffer are safe. Stay for the little guy. No one's overreacting, this is a very legitimate fear.

I'm currently immigrating from Australia to Canada. The process is long and arduous, and I highly doubt most Americans would get in unless they manage a corporation, they work in medical fields, scientific fields etc if they're not coming through on a relationship/ family reason. Not even oil, that crashed. Canada also is dealing with Syrian refugees. We don't really have the accommodations for first worlders who're upset that democracy worked in their country.

We really need to abolish the Electoral College. Trump didn't even get the most votes in this election. That's a huge slap in the face to the American people, and is pretty anti-democratic.

Please please please spend some time getting to understand the reasons behind of the electoral college. Understand it is in place to protect the entire population from the tyranny of the majority. Without the electoral college, every single minority would be at the mercy of the majority, and millions and millions of people not living on the east and west coast would become disenfranchised. No, it's not a perfect system, but it's the best compared to any other system humanity has ever tried. America never has been, and never should be a democracy, it's a constitutional republic.

Okay I just want to point out to those of you who are assuming those making the joke are white, privileged, entitled, supremacists, that a lot of the people making these jokes are those who have zero means of actually doing it. That's why it's a joke. You don't have to have money, power, and privilege to make jokes. I'm sure there are some people who are serious and it isn't much of a joke, but the majority of the people saying this, yes, they are joking, no one should be taking it seriously or guilting them for it.

And to those of you who think they're just not doing their research and being presumptuous for claiming they're going to make the move, I'm going to point out again that the majority if the people making the joke have zero means of actually doing it, NOR would they even CLAIM that they could. They're not being naive. The first person I even saw make this joke was my best friend, and she's the last person in the world who would make a big leap like that without knowing she could do it in the first place. And before anyone gives more of that "but even joking makes minorities feel bad" crap, she IS a minority. And I'm not about to sit there and say "wow, you shouldn't be joking about that" when A) I KNOW she's just trying to help herself feel better and B) I'm white, and if I EVER even TRIED acting like I knew better than her on minority issues, she'd slay me (and I'd take it too, because I'd totally deserve it).

Sorry if this sounds heated at all. I'm just very against making people feel bad for trying to help themselves feel better about all this, because it's already crazy enough as it is, we don't need to turn against each other just because some people need to make jokes and blow off steam. There are more than enough people who fully plan on staying in the country even before this argument started up, so no one's being abandoned. Just because some people are serious about it and will try moving, doesn't mean they all are.

If you are a minority, and me saying this makes you feel bad, I do apologize, I'm just seeing an awful lot of people who aren't minorities over twitter and tumblr claiming these jokes shouldn't be made, when the majority of the folks I saw actually making the joke are minorities. That just feels bad, man.

I can totally respect your concern.

From my end, I've seen white-privileged people making those remarks and openly discussing it. Joke or not, it's still waving the possibility they could very well get away with it, despite their own criticisms of accepting refugees.

As a second-class US citizen, I don't have that privilege. (I wasn't even allowed to vote for president) I could try to move there, but even my own visit to Canada left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

But if minorities have claimed the jokes, then yeah, step back and let them take it. Give oppressed groups all the power to vent and release steam.

And, on a side note, for the other people saying it was the Hilllary supporters who took to the streets, stop. Stop. It wasn't a protest to make Hillary president, it wasn't about "socialism", it was to be against the plans this horrible man (and mainly his horrible vice president) want to implement. It's about the safety of the people, not about being sore losers.

The problem is, his party has the majority in both the House and the Senate. The reason government has been so blocked up during Obama's administration is because the Republicans in the House and Senate didn't like having a democratic president. Trump may have a much easier time because the so called 'checks and balances' are all technically on his side. We can only hope that even the Republican party realizes that Trump is going to hurt people if they let him do whatever he wants.

A majority of the republican party have an extreme dislike, even going to go so far as to say hate, for Trump. I don't think they're going to overlook that just because they share a party.

Besides, people can write to their representatives to tell them not to vote for things and such, so it's not like the general populace is just SOL.

No, people overestimate what a president can do in four years and underestimate how beholden they are to their party and the public. Trumps own party doesn't really like him that much and only showed support after he started getting too much momentum. In 4 years something new will come along and we can deal with that.

What are YOU talking about? I didn't say shit about or for riots or people protesting, that post was made before those protests (or at least before I was aware of those) and it was directed at an entirely different matter.

As for the people I know making the statement. Yeah, now that I think about it it's actually only my friends that belong to minorities or do not actually have the ability to move that have asked me about moving to Canada seriously or jokingly (every time they say it it starts to be said in a less joking tone and more sad tone) When you don't feel welcome somewhere of course you want to leave. Most of them can't actually do it, as I said before it's much harder to immigrate into Canada than most people realize. Though honestly I sometimes wish it was easier, as it sucks when their compromise is 'as long as I don't hold hands or do anything with another guy in public I'll be safe' well... for those that can make a compromise anyway, poc don't really have a way to not look poc.

The moving to Canada thing was, at least for me, a joke... and I'm sure that to some others, it was also a joke. But that joke is old now.

In fact, moving to Canada is just an unwise decision. If one is really against Trump and against the offensive things he has said in his campaign, that person should stay in America to fight for their values and to ensure that justice remains in this country. I mean, if everyone against Trump moved out of the US, there would be no opposition for Trump, and America would completely fall into his hands (once he officially becomes president).

If you really hate Trump and what he stands for, don't run away. Stay and let him know that you are unsatisfied. Stay and fight for what you believe is right.

I am not a supporter of Trump, but his victory doesn't mean that I'm going to leave this country. Besides, this election isn't the only election. There's still midterms and the 2020 elections, and much more. I'm staying to participate in those.

I'm from America and I don't have any plans to move to Canada. You have to apply for a work visa and whatnot, I don't have any family in Canada so the transition would be difficult. To top it off it's a bit expensive, unless you're next to the border. xD
I'm not too worried about Trump. I mean the guy is a idiot with no political or military experience who doesn't believe in the basics of science.
If his policies do go through they'll be met with harsh criticism from both sides.
