I think I actually disagree with you when it comes to story over art.
As an artist, I'd like to think that people will overlook my mistakes as long as the story is engaging.
But as a reader, the comics I see becoming really popular have very standard stories but good art.
Sure there are a few outliers. But a lot of the stuff I see picking up steam is very basic plot wise.
Of course if the story is also good you'll grow faster. But overwhelmingly, people don't tend to click on comics unless the visuals are pleasing.
In my opinion : Clean, genre fitting visuals > Story.
At least when it comes to attracting readers.
So I don't completely disagree with what you said, but I think if your art isn't quite at the stage where you can handle comics, maybe you'd have a better chance as a novel instead.
