Pens and Marker?

I do my comic pages in fine liners (Staedtler is great!) and when I traditionally coloured, I used Faber-Castell colour pencils for the longest. They were fantastic and a very nice price. Brush pens are really nice for inking your lines, too! I highly recommend Kuretake brush pens which are firm and have a solid pigment. I'm not too experienced with markers, though. Copic seem to be the go-to brand but yes, a little expensive. I have a friend who uses Tombow and her work looks great!

omg, the Kuretake brush pens are the absolute best <3 I've inked over 300 pages with it, and I've only run out twice on the ink. It's not that bad at all!

No seriously, right? I even inked on LEAVES with them, haha! They have such a nice flow and they're super comfortable to hold (which is good for someone who's got high productivity like you -- 300+ pages, RADICAL). Plus, that nib is perfect for control. It's awesome you use them, too!

I always have like a ton of them, they're handy, and since I don't live that far away from the UK, it takes like 3 days to recieve them (I shop online). And I've also tried out their nibs which are sooo super hard to learn how to draw with, but so far it's top notch quality for a rather cheap price! :D

I can also recommend, if there's a need for black ink pens, the Uni Pin Fine Line is awesome when working with markers. They don't bleed out (neither does kuretake, which is a WOOOHOOO thing, haha!) on the colours which is perfect ;D

microns actually come in different colors, you just gotta find a place that sells them. I like stedler but idk the cheaper liners they have aren't my favorite.

Faber castell is an option as well but I'm not sure about colors.

Pro markers are definitely a choice if you're just starting out. If you really want to keep it cheap tho, you can just get bic markers and use them to do flats and simple shading with no blending. I remember I used to use my color pencils to do more detailed shading with them.

I'm using Bic for bases and sharpies for shadows, but it bleeds through the paper, and the residue it leaves behind fades onto the page behind it.

Hmm never tried brush pens, do the brushes stay the same or do they flare out after a few uses?

Brush pens usually have synthetic bristles that will hold their shape for a long time. This also depends on how you care for them and what surface you're using them on.

I really beat my last ones up (Pentel & Kuretake brands) but they lasted a good 2 years before I ended up replacing them.

It depends on the brand and nib type but the kuretake that we were discussing don't! They're very firm with a terrific longevity. This is one of the brush pens I'm using right now (if you have a Hobby Lobby or Michael's nearby, you can get them from these stores for like three bucks!).

Honestly I'm a big fan of the traditional tools.
What kind of marker are you looking for? same as copic ,aquarel or other type?
I use the Letraset Aquamarkers and Promarkers. promarkers are also alcohol based just as Copics, and alot cheaper. Or markers from Spectrum Noir are a good option too.
All good options if you can't affort Copics

I would think about a thicker kind of paper then. Alcohol markers (like comics) will always bleed through paper most of the time. Any kind of art marker (even water based ones) will bleed if the right amount of ink is used.

With the fancier brush markers you might get away with avoiding to much bleed if you're just doing flats but it's going to happen regardless unless you get really expensive paper.

I'm looking for markers that can shade easily with another. Sharpies are good but they bleed to much.

Then I would totally recommend the Pro markers or the Spectrum Noir. All 3 got alot variations of colors and aren't that pricey. They are both based with alcohol just a copics and blend easily with one another

Promarkers are GREAT to blend with when the paper's wet from the previous marker. They blend in pretty awesomely!
Here's an example of what you can do with promarkers only:

Perhaps not the best example, but there's a great variety of dark and light colours and this is made on an ordinary copy paper. I like using thin paper rather than thick and it's easier to blend the colours too.
However, I do have to use a thicker paper underneath, as it tend to bleed through.

For light skintones, I'd recommend Apricot, Ivory/Blush, Almond/sandstone/tan when shading skins. Of course, you can use other colours as well, but these are the ones I prefer. Ivory gets a little yellow when you scan it, and can sometimes clash with blush.
But it's easy to test before.

(For Sam, the greenhaired one, I used Ivory, Saffron and blue pearl so there's like multiple ways to use them!)

One alternative to copic markers that get as close to the quality and consistency of real copic is Prismacolor. These are high-quality markers but at a price that most people can afford. It is very suitable for beginners. You can consider it.
