Permission is over 70,000 words now Many of them are pretty good words. The story is historical and low fantasy, meaning most of the world looks and reads normal, except for those moments when genies or gods show up and cause havoc.
Gael has never been the most respectable sort. A very pretty Irish gangster boy, him falling in love with a Kansas medical student probably wasn't his most likely outcome. They did fall in love in 1915 though. It's 1918 now, Gael's back from WWI and he's defending his murder client in an Atlanta courtroom. The prosecution wants her hung, that afternoon. The judge is corrupt and put Gael's secret lover on the hastily assembled jury. Oh and then there's Gael's ex-boyfriend, that he doesn't remember, the god Anubis, who just got stabbed by the real killer.
It's all going to be fine... really.
